Maxima wins awards yet the I30 always gets trashed.

Ever notice that in general, the I30 doesn't fare well compared to it's competition in car reviews.
I find it somewhat odd because the Maxima is always a class leader whereas the poor I30 usually finds itself near the bottom of the heap.
Maybe it's just a function of the competition. Accord, Camry, 626 etc. don't have the sport and muscle to keep up with the Maxima whereas the I30 has to contend with the BMW 3, Audi A4, Acura TL/S, etc. etc.
Anyhow, the two cars are very similar in performance and you do get value for the extra money spent on luxury items on the I30 so I do find the desparity intriguing.
Thoughts?

The first time you try to get decent warranty or repair service, you will know EXACTLY which car you bought. To me, aside from offering hids in the 2000+ models and looks, dealer service is the main reasons I would go I30 vs maxima.

Well, I30s and Maximas are soooo similar. I30s just have a more luxurious interior (but less and less compared to the 2002 Max).
And both cars are competing it totally different classes...basically you can relate this situation to the Camry -> ES300.

The Maxima/I30 "twins" are an example of American-style badge engineering, like Cadillacs and other GM cars. Most people buying at this high price want exclusivity for that kind of money. Acuras and Honda's, for instance, even tough they share the same platforms (CL's and Accords, Integras and Civic's) are so dis-similar in styling, appointments and performance that exclusivity is assured for the Acura line.
In other words, it doesn't mean the I30 is a bad car, it just can't provide the 'snob appeal' a car in the class it competes in demands.
