Hmmmm...this looks bad!

I was looking over my service manual last night and noticed that my air filter is due for a change. I popped it out...well see for yourselves!

30,000 miles and a year later!

That looks entirely normal. If the engine side looked that you could worry a bit. You can buy Fram replacements @ discount stores. It is not a bad idea to use a throttle body cleaner which is sprayed in after disconnecting the intake. ( I owned a 95 and 97 Max and replaced air filter on both)

Get a K&N filter so you can clean it when it gets dirty.

So having that black stuff on there is normal??? That makes me feel better. I thought maybe I was neglecting the max too much.

So a K&N will last a lifetime and costs 50 bucks, how much are the standard filters?

Standard paper air fliters range from $15.95-$29.95. You have to change them every 10-15,000 miles or so. K&N is the way to go, it will last the lifetime of the vehicle.

Thanks

Thanks for the info. You guys sold me on the K&N....now I have to look like a Goof-Ball going into a auto parts store searching for a mysterious filter....that of course won't be in stock.....and they will tell me that they can order it.....and then I will have to tell them I will try somewhere else....and so on!

You know the drill!

They usually have them in stock. You won't be a goof-ball, unless you buy a filter for a truck something. j/k

With paper filters, i would change them roughly 12-15k (city driving) & about 15-20k for highway driving.

BTW-Drop teh caps, it makes it like your yelling. And this board is here to help, not make people feel like ****. You gotta learn sometime & if not, then what is the purpose of Jiffy Lubes & service centers like that.

K&N

the K&N fits many cars so it may be in stock!
If you have time get an online quote. I got a quote for $38 (from carparts with coupon) and local autozone matched it.

my air filter gets the same black "oily" soot, particularly on one side (in one direction). seems to get dirty faster than normal too (7500 miles).

just recently dropped in a K&N filter myself.

thats normal..just flip it around and then when that side gets dirty, clean it. Just buy the cleaning kit for about $10.00 bucks and you will be able to clean it about 3-4 times with it.

Can you get an after market intake system? If so then you will be happy.

It looks a little skanky, but for 30K it seems to have lasted a while. @ 42 KKilos (26 KMiles) I had already put 2 new filters in.

Re: Hmmmm...this looks bad!

I changed mine at 22k and it looks like urs plus some grasshoppers!! Needless to say, i was surprised because none of my other cars look this dirty. I guess its the pink filter that exaggerates the effect. But i dont remember my pathfinder ones being this dirty. But if it makes u or ME feel better, i say thats normal=)
