Engine dead in the water..... HELP Starter?

My 2000 SE. The gist of it......

For the last two months or so, when I go to start the car (manual or remote) the engine would sometimes stumble to get started-sounded like it was struggling to crank for some of the cylinders...but some would start fine. But 40% of the time the engine would start normaly without problems. Today it struggled to start....but it just wouldn't stop struggling. I pulled the key out after 4 seconds. Tried again with same result, but at about 3 seconds the engine completely stopped, stopped cranking. Then it went dead. After this, I tried starting again with the key and nothing...

All the dash lights come on, the CD player comes on, the headlights come on...so don't think its the battery. No SES codes, or any warnings. Just to make sure, I tried to start the car via a jump. Didn't work, nothing moved. now every time I try to start the car, I hear 3 clicks inside the engine ompartment and no movement in the engine compartment at all. Then it tries again, 3 clicks and stops trying.

Thinking the Starter is dead, and needs to be replaced... What do you think? How much?

The starter is cheap and it's cost you only $149.99 with returning the core/the old one from autozone.

Are you sure you starter has gone bad? I have the same symptom like your. The headlights, Radio, Alarm, Interior lights were working fine. I was thingking my starter has gone bad. I hit the starter with hammer (usually work) but nothing happened, instead my starter won't crank at all.

you could change the starter by yourself. don't worry it's very easy. it took me 35 minutes that's not include remove the Air-box. My car has berk intake, so save my time from removing the box.

Well the local place wants $330 to do it. Part is about $150 and rest labor. I've never had to change a part on my car at all. I don't have any tools and a bit nervous about removing items in the engine compartment.....that being said, I think I may just take it to the shop.

Are the clicking sounds after ignition a sign of a bad stater or solenoid? Is there a write up on how to swap out the starter...?

you don't really need a write up.... if i remember, there's 3 bolts
one is really long and a little deeper to get into
just unplug the battery, the starter, and start unbolting
