starter housing broken, lodged into transmission?

my car does not start doesnt even crank or turnover. Battery is brand new, tried boosting and still got nothing.

took it to a new mechanic not my existing and he said the starter housing has broken off and gone into the tranny, and that he has to open up the tranny and all this fun stuff.

anyone ever heard of anything like htat ?

thanks for all the help

That really doesn't make any sense. If it had shattered inside you would have heard the shrapnel getting chewed by the flexplate. And no, you don't have to pull the tranny to get that junk out if it's in there.

wow.. i say u need to go back to ur old mechanic.. i never heard of you having to open up the transmission because your starter housing broke.. lol.. the transmission is sealed as far as i know.. and if it was that easy for things to get inside the tranny then things would be getting in there and breaking stuff in there all the time.. i say get a written estimate of this bullcrap and report this wonderful person to the BBB.. you can do that right? hell yeah.. do it

Wow. Just take it out and look - starters don't blow up like that.

It's extremely easy to pull a starter. There's no way it shattered and got into the transmission. Maybe the housing around the torque converter/clutch.

just an update here,

towed it to my other mechanic late last night. The housing around the starter was shattered, and he said it is possible that hte pieces are in the tranny and the way to make sure its not is to go and remove the housing of the tranny and see if the pieces are in there.

the "nose cone" (if it has 1) broke off and can become lodged in the bellhousing between the ring gear and inner housing
nippendenso gear reduced starters have an exposed pinion and no nose cone
ive seen this happen on vortechs and it jams em up and is not as uncommon as you would think (only kinda rare)
and those pieces are most likely aluminum so forget about trying to fish around with a magnet

that's funny! ^

Pull the starter and you can see if parts have fallen off it.
