Tranny slipping... next step??

when i installed my fancy vb in my 4th gen i changed the filter + cleaned mags + flush. why do you ask? it's really rather easy.
and yes that was a general statement about letting the auto trans shift on it's own. however unless I'm mistaken the fastest(top 3) auto maximas are left in D.
to the op: good luck finding out what's wrong with it! you only clean the mags so they can pick up more metal. it has NOTHING to do with fixing your problem only a good maintenance habit.

Good luck then, there is 1 bolt that does not loosen that holds the screen on, i belive another member on here posted about getting his off, but it involved using a torch or something.

i don't recall a bolt that doesn't come off. and i certainly didn't need a torch...

wyche89,
I have this same problem with my 2k max gle. I drive it hard probably 1/5 of the time. It might be your motor mounts tho, I believe there is 3. I changed these once and there was no hard shifting b/w 1st and 2nd gear. The problem is that I didn't fully replace all of the motor mounts. I only replaced one I believe. B/C I hated the jerk b/w 1st and 2nd, I used to let go of the gas or slowly let off the pedal and its worst. It got worse when on the freeway I was going about 110-120 for about 30 minutes straight and now I have a problem with my 2nd to 3rd with a delay (transmission is slipping)... So from 1st to 2nd the car is jerks (hard shift) and from 2nd to 3rd (trans...slips)....Also when getting on the on-ramp on the freeway, i can also notice it now.
I'm interested in treating with Sea Foam first & maybe having all of my motor mounts replaced. I'm thinking of rebuilding my tranny too at this point.

110-120mph for 30 minutes straight? Good way to trash your car and possibly kill someone.

You don't need any tuning nonsense, Nissan has been building vehicles for many decades and they know how to build vehicles for sensible people. FYI, all transmissions even the ones made by MB suck, so relax.
Guys who drive in the 120MPHs, if you put your brain on the road and take some drugs to control ur adrenaline, you will be fine, your vehicle will be fine, your parents can rest peacefully that you will return home in one piece and most importantly we fellow motorists will be safe and can return to our dear ones in one piece.
Trust me haste is waste, will take you no where in life.

btw automatic transmissions are meant to give way and wear out

To my knowledge, noone answered his original question of dropping the pan and cleaning magnets, atleast that I can tell. Maybe I am wrong, but here goes:
From what I have learned, I would 1.) leave the pan on and put in some AutoRx (check their guidelines) and check to see if it is ok to use w/the synthetic I believe you said you had in there. 2.) Drive according to AutoRX guidelines and flush via return line. 3) Baby it for a while for it to "get used to" the changes since any grime removed will make things more slippery and trans will have to adjust to it.
I am NO pro, but I read alot on this and other sites, and sounds like you got buildup due to lack of changes and gotta get it out. The AutoRX will do so, but you gotta change that out after the recommended interval, and BABY it for a while and then see how it performs? I believe you prob got some out w/ your changes, but the leftover grime and the new fluid prob don't go so well together, thus your slipping issues and poor performance.
Just my $.02 but the RX and more fluid is a cheap thing to try b4 a rebuild. It just might work. Try the AutoRx and see what happens and baby it and you might get another 100K on it.

whatever autoRX is, it sounds like a band aid.
cleaning the magnets and flushing the fluids will not make it perform better. it is simple routine maintenance that should be performed to an automatic transmission every 75k miles or so.
if there is something wrong with your auto tranny you have 2 choices:
1. drive it till it brakes and then replace via junk yard or a shop.
2. goto a tranny shop, ask their expert opinion which is probably better then any of us, and do what they say.
there is really little else afaik you can do.

I will let you know around this weekend. I recently replaced my tranny that had 130,000 miles on it with a 01 AE with 51,000 on it and had jeff do the stage II VB before it was installed. I have a slip and have the shift solenoids coming from daveb tomorrow. My hangs going from 1st to 2nd. Jeff also told me that once he did the VB the fluid was brown and to do a flush and have a trans shop check line pressure. I have put about 300 miles since the swap so we will see if any shavings are present.

Mine was 318.00 from daveb. I had it set for 2 day delievery but DHL messed up so I won't get it till monday. Dave called them and I got shipping refunded. So now we will have to wait. I am still going to check out line pressure at a trans shop.

actually.. the second one is titled "DIY Transmission replacement," and talks about the process of a complete transmission swap with a 2002 I35 tranny.. not a VB.. thats what i was commenting on

is AutoRX available in stores, or just on the internet? Is there a real difference between that and tranny seafoam?

I am beginning to think mine is worse then the shift solenoids. I got on it today even knowing it doesn't shift good and got to 5k hanged for a little bit rolled back to about 4k then jumped and pegged the fuel cut.

alright, so i'm leaning towards gettins some autoRX and doing another flush.. a brief history of the trans.. i got it with 76k on the odometer, and the fluid was red.. about 10,000 miles later (approx 86k), i noticed the fluid was brown, so i had nissan do a "flush" in which they probably just did a drain/fill.. and the fluid was still brown.. so i'd say about 10,000 miles later (about 96k) the fluid is brown, so i do a drain/fill myself with mobil 1 synthetic.. still brown, so i do a flush at about 100k with 10 quarts of mobil 1 synthetic thru the tranny return line.. this got the fluid redder, but at about 105k it started to slip from 1st to 2nd at about 5-6k rpms... now im at 108k and thinking about using some AutoRX treatment with another flush to treat the slipping, but will it make my problem worse?
i'm thinking theres still some gunk in there that may be causing the trans to slip, and it needs to come out with AutoRX.. it's not like my transmission has never been maintained until now, since the fluid was red when i got it, and i've done fluid changes since then.. so i'm thinking it MIGHT be ok to use AutoRX with another flush without making the problem worse??

hey what do you guys think about this?
http://www.nissanhelp.com/Ownership/.../NTB00-039.htm
u think that could be the issue? i talked to somebody, and they said it probably wouldnt help.. i'm just hoping i dont need a rebuild or replacement

after some research i'm thinking it might the the solenoids or TCM... i dont know man.. im confused.. thats the most definitive answer i can find, but i was advised against it.. nobody else has any thoughts?

while the engine is running, i notice that there is steam (maybe smoke) rising up from the tranny dipstick hole.. however, the fluid doesnt smell burnt.. it smells just like it does in the bottle.. thats why im thinking it might be steam.. is that normal?
