Service Guy at Nissan said "never seen a 00' 5 speed"!!!

Great!! I am taking my car in because the Service Engine light came on and hopefully get the throttle problem fixed as well. I asked the guy if there was a TSB on the throttle problem and he said "we'll have to hook her up to our big ol'e computer to find the problem".

He also said I have a rare car, because he has never seen a 00' 5 speed come through the service at that dealership. While I am there I am going to look at the 02' , and definately going to drive one!

Is it really as bad as everyone says? He also told me that it would only take one hour to fix the problem "bring it in at 7am and I will have you out by 8am"! How can he say that without even diagnosing the problem?

Eh, sounds like he's never seen one coming through the serivce department, doesn't mean he doesn't know there was one. So it's not AS bad. Maybe it was his first day and he said that about all the cars...

He's probably telling the truth. I heard that the 5 speed makes up only 20% of Maxima production. It would be possible for his service department to never see a 5 speed come thru with low numbers like that.

I wonder what percent of 2K2 will have the 6 speed.

Glad I got an automagic!!!

(you realize, of course, that you're only a hair's breath away from hearing "Sorry, they all do that- that's the way they're built" excuse from them. GM originally developed that concept and held the patent on it for many years but the patent recently expired and now every manufacturer is free to use it.)

It is 5% of production.

The new altima 3.5/ 5 speed will only be 3% of production and the 02 maxima with the 6 speed will be 5% of production.

Our 5 speeds are pretty rare birds for sure!

In weird way, it's great. Let's just say a car happens to out drag a auto Max and thinks that way until he, or she, happens to line up with one of us 5sps. What a shock when the 5sp Max out drags him/her!

btw 5spd Maximas always have higher resale values than automatics..last summer I was shopping for a used 97 SE 5 spd at Manheim dealer's autoauction in PA. I was looking for a car with under 45,000 miles, within $15,000 range. No way Jose....manuals are all nicked and scratched, most worn out...pricewise they were sold for more $ than loaded GLE's and even I30's with even lower mileage. I30 autos were cheaper then GLE's. So if you got a 5-spd it is a rare car.

Actually, Nissan only built 3% of Maximas with the 5 spd tranny in 2000. I know...hard to believe but..that's all it is. the 01's were exactly the same so...I'd bet the 02's are no different.

I heard that of the 80,000 or so Maximas being built for the
2002 model year only a couple thousand or so 6 speed manuals
will be built (roughly around 6,000 - 7,000). Does anyone have
a more accurate estimate?

Yes, 5spds are rare, that's why we have to hold on to them. My first max was a 5spd GXE and when I went to trade her in, I found two Superblack SE both of them 5spd. One a 98 the other 99. I took the 99

I find 80,000 units to be awfully low...concidering Nissan sold roughly 130,000 Maximas a year since 2000. Regardless of the amounts though, yes...the 5 spd is quite rare and, even with its' somewhat notchy shift feel, it's still an awsome sport sedan.
By the way...for any of you who've installed an aftermarket intake, or plan to, be sure you follow instructions telling you to disconnect the battery before doing it. This resets the ECU and if not done, may cause "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" light to come on in the near future.
