Steering wheel clunk...

I did a search for this problem... but im not really sure what the problem is exactly... i searched for "steering wheel clunk" with google and couldnt find anything useful

now thats out of the way...

the maxima that i just bought has been exhibiting this problem since day one... but the car was bought as is... basicly... with the wheel straight... if i use my finger and move it to left and right about half an inch... i feel a clunk/tick/click w.e you want to call it... its always there... no matter what position the wheel is at.

its very noticible at low speeds especially on indecent roads... while turning...

i got a shadetree mechanic to look at it... and he says its worn tierods... and says the problem is near the front wheel..

but to me.. it feels like its closer to the steering wheel... like the wheel is loose...

--

IF i hold the wheel really right.. and applie pressure pushing it down... and then try turning it... the clunking stops...

any ideas?...

this sounds like a tierod to me, and i would certainly hope its near the front, you know, where the steering system is take the wheels off and wiggle the tierods, if no slop then hold one of the tierods and have someone turn the steering wheel back and forth, do this on both sides, if you can feel freeplay then the rack/pinion has a bit of backlash, up to you whether to replace, its not a catastrophic failure, just a nuscence.

Broke tie-rod equals bad roller coaster ride. Have it professionally inspected, lest you take a sharp turn and something gives out.
