Bad starter or alternator?

Hey guys

Started the car yesterday and this morning. When starting the car turn over and had a slightly elongated 1st fire.

So instead of that immediate engine turn over. I crank, the engine turns a couple of times. At ignition I get this half second whoosh sound and the car is started.

I've had this before and I think it's the 1st signs of starter failure.

Thanks for your help.

Walt

I can't quite picture what you're talking about, but it doesn't sound like starter failure to me. Not sure of the whoosh sound you're hearing but usually hard starts like you described are a result of something either fuel or spark related. If your starter is spinning fine, and the engine isn't turning over, it really has nothing to do with the charging or the starting system, because the starter is doing its job.

Try performing a few maintenance procedures such as replacing your spark plugs and fuel filter first, then if the problem persists look into fuel pump, coils, etc.

It could also be perfectly normal if it only happens every so often. I know my car did took longer than normal to start just the other day, but it has run perfectly since.

After work I had a buddy listen while I fired up the car. The odd sound is coming from the starter location.

I read a DIY that I found on google and the person mentioned that his starters grease dried out and after repacking it was fine.

I will check confirm later tonight if it is for sure coming from the starter.

So your starter is making an audible noise? If so, then it is entirely possible that it's on its way out the door. At least they're inexpensive and easy to replace
