what kind of cat to buy?

a friend of mine has a 2000 maxima. she needs to replace her catalytic converter. nissan wants a lot of money for one. they quoted her something like $1000 with parts and labor. she doesnt have any aftermarket mods just wants it replaced. should she still get it from nissan or is an aftermarket one like Random Tech a better way to go. unfortunately I don't know much about parts for her max. I have a 97.different gen.

no need to buy the expensive nissan one. just get a cheaper aftermarket one.

You might want to get some clarification on which converter is bad. If they are quoting 1000 it might be a cali spec car and have 3 converters, one of which they would never diagnose for any reason which leaves the two expensive ones. One is in teh y-pipe and the other is just off the front exhaust manifold. If it is either of the latter 2 then you are kinda screwed in the aftermarket. When my manifold cat went out i was LUCKY to find one from someone for super cheap, but a junkyard may be the best bet if it is one of the two precats.
