Service Engine Soon (SES) light after new battery was put in ..

My 02 recently needed a new battery as car died when someone left a light on. The battery lasted since the car was new so i am not really complaining. It lasted about 5 and half years. Anyhow, since the battery was put in, my service engine soon light is on. Are the two issues related? I am just debating if i should go back to the shop that replaced the battery and have them look up the codes. Thoughts?

Why don't you just check the codes?

Is there a way to check the codes without ODB II meter?

In the aptly named sticky 'GOT Check Engine Light?!? WHAT should you do?', (which, by the way, is right above your thread...) there's a link that leads you to the FAQ, which leads you here - http://maxima.theowensfamily.com/ecu.asp

Short answer: yes.

SES = Service Engine Soon, (All 5th gen Maximas) CEL = Check Engine Light (Some 4th gen Maximas) MIL = Malfunction Indicator Light, (Reference from FSM ALL Maximas)

no matter what you call it...the light means there is a problem and you have to check the code to see what it is
