My three cents:

This is a gray area. I've always moderated based on both the tone and direction of the thread, even if there is so called flaming going on, because sometimes even when there are hostile responses, there is some useful information and the discussion actually remains constructive. It is rare, but it happens.

And like Matt and Prince posted, new members can't be so sensitive nor should vets jump at everyone's throat about a repost, but there is a fine line between a reminder for people to do their part before posting a new thread and flaming. BOTH parties need to realize that this is still just the internet.

Also, for people who have issues with the way the moderators do things around here, please feel free to email/PM/IM us with comments. I can't promise that we'll execute all your suggestions, but they will be considered seriously. If you have issues with a post or a thread, please use the report bad post button. Just because we're not on here everyday posting/locking doesn't mean that we're letting this forum go to the dogs.

I only have one beef about some posts. When you come into a forum asking for help, it would be nice to not type in "IM speak". You are asking vets to take time to help you solve your issue, take the time to at LEAST type in plain English. It doesnt take any longer, makes the post much easier to read and will probably get you a usable response quicker.

If you are to lazy to type, I am to lazy to help.

I hate that, I almost never respond to a post like that just because it's so annoying/can't even read it.

They don't "demand" nothing...they just are newbies wanting to gain some knowledge about their Maxima's. As for the people that type in IM, I understand that, some of those abbreviations are hard to get and people should type on here in English. Also for searching...unless you pay $20 no search function really works well. I search a lot for little stuff I have questions about and they usually don't come up with anything but what is in peoples signatures. And especially now since a lot of the older links don't work. I'm a member of a lot of forums and instead of all this arguing and bullying the people actually try to help people out...

Sooner...you have helped me out a lot before but you've also been a real jerk on a thread I posted a few months back...I made a video of my Maxima and instead of posting something nice or at least nothing at all you posted that my video was horrible and all it was was pictures and the music sucked

It's not that big of a deal to be informative to the newbs and help them, I remember when you cleaned your throttle body on you Maxima and everyone was making jokes at your expense...I bet you didn't like that very much.

Dear <insertusernamehere>,

Thank you for visiting Maxima.org! Your stay here will be longer, more productive and infinitely more enjoyable for all involved if you learn to use the official language of The Org…English.

A few rules that will make this easier on all of us:

• rANdoM cAPiTalIZatIOn iS NoT aPPreCIaTeD
• PLEASE TURN OFF CAPS LOCK. YOU ARE ASKING A QUESTION NOT YELLING ACROSS THE ROOM AT US.
• Punctuation is your friend use it appropriately it makes your posts easier to read and to understand and makes it more likely that we will answer you
• Ths isnt IM. Pls dnt use usls abbrev. K? It makes you look like you can’t take the time to type out an actual question. But you expect us to type out an actual response? Think about it.
• Spell check is there for a reason. Misspelled words make you look lazy. And who wants to help a lazy person?

Oh, and remember, search first, post second!

Thank you! Come again!

one thing about this site is that people dont know how to search. we should make it clear to all noobs or vets or passer byers how to search. that will make things much easier to deal with.

i never flame.... i just sarcastically criticize you...

Wow, this thread went hostile...

I think some people are a little confused about this, or at least how I interpret it. Maybe I'm wrong, but it doesn't seem that hard to me...

The rule isn't saying you should spoonfeed new members and give them their answers to any and every thread they post. It's not a kick in the nuts to the veterans.

There are threads on here where someone with a whopping 20 posts under their belt asks a question about something that people who have been here for 6 months new there was a single elaborate thread about. The responses that ensue in this scenario from some of the veterans in this thread are downright nasty, degrading and insulting people. It seems really unnecessary MOST OF THE TIME.

However, there are also what I call "The Sooner Responses". VERY rarely have I found these responses to be overkill like some of the others, even though they are generally sarcastic. They get the point across firmly without being insulting. Posting "Ask yourself: Does this topic REALLY need a new thread?" is not degrading or flaming at all in my book, and I don't think a response like this or many of the other Sooner Responses would violate a rule like this. Irish gave good examples of the kinds of things that would be a violation early in the thread, utilizing profanity and personal insults. I agree that these responses should not be tolerated, they are not constructive in any way.

On a side note, A LOT of the OGs and Veterans here harp on and on about searching and all the available information that has been discussed on here, however, if a newbie goes and actually does search, finds a thread that's over a year old, and posts a relevent question pertaining to the topic of that thread, the vice squad is there to harp on about bringing threads back from the grave. If the information that is in the grave is for read-only purposes, and you can't post a new thread with a question about that topic, well, what's the point in searching them? (By the way, I'm not talking about the leeches bringing back 6 year old threads with stupid pointless "That's cool" type posts to get up to 15)

There was actually an old 2003 thread I was reading discussing (or rather arguing) the pros and potential cons of a modification that would adjust the clutch engagement point on a 6 speed. The thread ended with two factions strongly for or against the mod, and had no distinct conclusion. Given that the information was 4 years old, I was curious if anyone had any new information or ideas on the point, and considered posting in the thread, but backed off due to the consequences of bumping a 4 year old thread. I also considered a new thread on the subject, but then again, the thread I had just read was like 9 pages long and I didn't want to get all the "REPOST OMG!!! THIS DOESN'T NEED A NEW THREAD!!!!" crap either. So I just let it go. True story.

I realize now that there are ways to bring old threads back or start new topics like this that would be appropriate, but I was fairly new at the time and didn't want to risk some of the flame fest I saw in other threads.

I also have to say, being someone who does get an occasional moment to read at work I do go through old threads. I am actually shocked at how knowledgeable some of the Veterans are, and I think it's genuinely sad that if someone were to track the last 1000 posts (by two veterans in this thread particularly), I'd bet that at least 970+ of them would just be flamefest or OT posts. But oh well, to each their own.

I was also recently reading that thread and came to the same conclusion as you. It didn't get resolved if it were a good or bad mod but I didn't want to post in a old thread or start a new one knowing it was there. I simply stayed away and never found my answer. So basically I never found or was able to discuss a maxima issue on maxima.org because I didn't want to deal with Flaming.

The thing about harping on search though, is that it sucks a lot of the time. You are either too specific (no threads matching) or too vague (100 threads matching) and then you get a 20 or 30 page long thread that seems to have nothing to do with what you searched for but *somewhere* in those 400-600 responses may be an answer. That's not even bringing up the broken links to old threads. It's no wonder that people ask questions that have been answered before and it doesn't justify 'the vice squad' being complete and utter a-holes every chance they get. It sure seems like most of the stuff they post is off topic but they ***** about other people

Anyway, I like the rule. Civility should never be optional.

I agree about the search, but have learned to work within the parameters. I DO read a lot within the search. Such as when I had my alternator problem over the Thanksgiving week, I read a lot about the Oil and Brake light, alternator replacement but NOTHING broke out anything regarding bumps or possible issues. So I did create a thread that would hit most key words and go through the issues I personally had to deal with. That’s what I don’t see here. People are quick to say search and point to a thread, but "most" (generalization) times that thread is to vague. Also people come in, ask for a ton of help get a bunch of suggestions and the thread dies. So now it shows up in search, but does not give a solution, although it will give some ideas. If you ask for help and get it, at least have some courtesy and reply back to your thread with the solution.

Counterpoint: If people didn’t bark/whine/complain and misdirect a thread, then digging out info would not be so bad. Courtesy has a LOT to do with gaining respect and knowledge. Don’t threadjack. If it seems like a basic question, I would definitely bet a case of Shiner that it has already been addressed before. Specifically: If you think you are the first to muse the thought of putting XXX intake on your car, you are living in the dark ages. Use some common sense prior to starting a thread. Most people want a pat answer tailored to their specific issue without having to think about it. What most of the “attacks” are getting at that is trouble shooting is a thinking mans game. While “some” things can be addressed as a step by step, most times you will have to think outside the box and take pieces of information gathered from different threads and create the final solution.

I think what might be the problem is that the Discussion forums are poorly organized. There are no sub-sections within each forum. A lot of threads here are "I have a problem" thread. It might be a better idea to divide sub-sections within each generation into things like "appearance/lighting/body kits," "suspension/braking," "engine/hp&tq mods," "mechanical/installation help," and so forth. We already have threads and stickies discussing various intakes, headers/exhausts, spring/strut combos, but all this info is jumbled up into one big subsection of this forum, which may seem daunting for newer members to try searching. I understand that would be a great undertaking, especially since there are so many generations of the maxima, but on a few other forums to which I belong and lurk, that's the general idea of how they're structured. And hardly any of its members are as angry at each other as we are.

not saying they are illiterate but they rarely tend to notice them big bold uppercase words (RULES). they just selfishly ask questions hoping to get a response in 2 seconds and its done. (i'm not stereotyping, im just saying that from experience because I did it a few times myself)

All I have to say is to irish! You hit on the exact things that I've been trying to portray. And it's not just about the newbs either. I used to post in the 5th gen forums frequently (just look at my post count - the rate has decreased dramatically over the past year and a half) and now I feel I can't even say what needs to be said before the 'vice squad' (is that what we're calling them now?) almost automatically posts the typical responses as outlined above. Several of the veterans ARE very smart and IMO need to put that to more constructive use. And as Irish says, just look at some of the old posts. I posted SEVERAL stupid *** threads that already existed, but nowhere did I see anything like what I see daily in the 5th gen forum now...

Very true... I'm still a noob here and even I'm annoyed by all the "CAI" questions and whatnot, so I know how veterans must feel facing such threads years long.

But my opinion is to cut some slack towards the flameage of noobs. Out of the three gen subforums (4,5,6) I frequent, 5th is the most hostile IMO. 4th gen is cool and 6th gen is very chill, but 5th gen is like... woah! Just look at each subforum stickies and they will speak for themselves. 5th gen can get nuked for asking about CAI while 6th gen can get like a few CAI threads on the same page and no one would make a big fuzz about it.

And when some noobs do search and read, and they bump "not so recent" threads for any updates and they get uber flamed on. Yes I agree that some noobs bump them for the hell of it but I personally find it amusing

You do know that once you find a thread that could hold your answer you can open that thread and search in ONLY that thread for your answer...

It's the button that says "Search this thread"...

Donation = Good

It's only $20... Don't tell me this site has not saved nearly everyone on this forum well over $20.

Didn't realize donating would add that. Right now $20 is too much for me to pan out because of many situations but in the past I've meant to many times and have not gotten around to it. Donated to other forums and will here someday. Mainly not for the extra functions but just to help maxima.org.

Another maxima board that I am on has all functions open to everybody but does a once a year donation drive and it seams to be succesfull for them.

Could be succesful for them, however, this is also by far the largest and busiest Maxima forum. Much more expensive to keep running and if everyone had access to the search, it would eat up a TON of bandwidth and that would require expensive upgrades.

Yea I figured it was members feat but just wondering where would the button be. I know $20 isn't much but that's 19 cheeseburgers! which makes up a week of breakfast, lunch, and dinner!
I'll come around it someday too!

So what did you want me to edit?

We've established that you do not have that function, editing it will only lead to further confusion. Now we all know who has that function and who doesn't. It's good info, I'll leave it.

I would imagine that a yearly drive would bring in a creditable amount of cash compared to however many people donate here per year.

Many OG members that have all these functions may have donated $20 years ago and nothing since. But if there were a yearly drive with say window stickers or t-shirts or something they may have donated 2-3-5 times, whoknows.

I think were getting off topic though.

What does this thread have to do with this?

We’re pleased to announce that Maxima.org has been acquired by Internet Brands, Inc., which operates leading automotive web sites such as CarsDirect.com and NewCarTestDrive. Internet Brands plans to keep Maxima.org a separate, thriving site as we continue to expand our content, community and traffic.

The main benefit of the acquisition be more infrastructure and technology resources behind the site. Better servers and hardware will mean better performance for the site. And more technology resources will mean faster bug-fixes, quicker turnaround on site changes and more frequent updates in site software. You’ll still access the site as you always have with your existing username and password.

We're excited about the upgrades the acquisition will bring, and hope you are too.

blaming the search function is such a cop out and an excuse to start a pointless repeat thread.

use google.

as a test, i gave my girl 5 question that would get asked on here. within minutes, she has the answer to every single question. if she can do.....
