reverse light switch

when i put my shifter into reverse the reverse lights will light up then shut off, if i pull the stick all the way back and keep my hand on it, the lights stay on. when i let the stick go into its normal resting place in reverse, the lights go back off again. where is the adjustment for when the car realizes the reverse lights should be on> is it under the shift trim? need to know how it is adjusted..

thanks.

It is located in the bottom of the transaxle.

Part is only about $30 or so at the dealer, but the installation is from underneath the car, and it is messy. All the gear oil will drain out when this switch is removed. Common problem with these cars.

I have a similar problem where my reverse lights will come on, and sometimes they just wont.

My check engine light gives me: P1706 - Park/Neutral Position (PNP) Switch
Is this the same problem the OP is having? I looked in the FSM and it was not very detailed about how to change/check it.
If it is just a 30$ part and can be done the same time I am changing my MT oil, then I would love a little more info on how to go about it.

Thanks

Yes, that is exactly the same issue, the switch needs to be replaced.

Not sure if there is a write-up or anything, but there are numerous threads about this switch on the board. 4th Gen guys have a little more trouble, since the cars are older. Same switch though. Just search around and you will likely find one.

just changed mine out... if you get the part from the dealer ask for the picture of where it goes... if you don't go from underneath, take out the air filter box and you will be right on top of it. replaced part #32005 & 32006

how accessible is this switch, the FSM shows removing the starter, crossmember, crankshaft position sensor, driveshaft.. is all of this necessary, the FSM is doing it from above the car, if i go from under is the switch on the bottom?

Isn't this the plug to the bottom drivers side of the transmission, one 10mm bolt holding it in??? if so, where does this wire lead to, i cant figure it out.

The Reverse Light Switch is held in by itself... it is a blue or black (I believe blue but I forget which) sensor in the transmission that screws into the transmission near the shift linkage I believe (maybe to the side of it) Either way, it is not 10mm, it is going to be much larger (I believe 17 or 18 mm)
