need some help... code p0171

I cleared the light and it has not come back on yet. The car feels slow though, and i think the engine makes a different noise than when it used too. Also I have been getting 300 miles a tank on the highway, which is lets say it has been better, a lot better. So I do not understand why I am getting crappy gas mileage with a code for the engine being lean? Some have pointed this problem to a faulty maf sensor. So I was wondering if anyone knows if I should check something else before buying a new one? Also do I have to get the ECU reprogrammed if I do buy a new one? how much are they btw? Thanks a lot

The lack of fuel could be MAF related, if so, a MAF related code should up up shortly.

I got that message once. I simply reset it, and it never came back.
