are my rear calipers cashed?

Last time I got some brake work done the guy told me that both rear calipers were "really tough to open." I didn't really think much of it since he said both the rears were the same.

A few months later I started to hear a rubbing sound from one of the rear calipers. It was a very deep sound that would only happen at 5-10 mph while I was turning or going up a hill.

Anyway, now I've got them off myself. I haven't gotten to the left side yet, but the right rear caliper will not go back on. I suppose I could hammer it into place, but I know it's supposed to be pretty easy.

Is it time to call DaveB for some replacement parts?

you used the correct tool to open them right?...the rears require a specific tool to back of the piston

You need to get the brake tool.. go to autozone and rent it. The rear caliper is a screw.. so no hammer need it. Use some WD 40 and or any other lubricant to clean around the seal.. if the seal is broken just add as much bubricant as you can.... and try to get a rear caliper kit to fix it yourself. This is the tool you need, website if you need to read about it.

My caliper piston was fine but the pins were seized. Took a vice and a blowtorch to get them out of the torque member. Might want to regrease those...

okay well neither auto parts store has that tool. One offered to loan me a "master tool kit" for the low price of $99. No thanks.

There's gotta be some way to get it to back out without the tool. I'm not putting new pads on, I just need to get it <5mm wider so that it will clear that little protrusion/nub on the back of the brake pad.

I found mine at a local speed shop paid $5 too much for it but they had it in stock...I can not think of a way to do it without the tool...the piston is threaded

I ended up buying a little cube shaped universal tool that fits on a socket wrench. It worked, and only cost like 5 bucks.

Thanks for the help
