5th Gen Common Issues

I am considering picking up a 5th Gen (2000 SE). Just wanted to know what are some of the common problems to look for. I know the 4th gens pretty well but haven't played with any maximas 2k or newer.

Thanks for your help.

I'm also new to the 5th Gens albeit I have a 5.5. The common problems I've encountered thus far include the:

1. oil in the downshoot tubes (fixed)
2. the minor (in my case) oil burning issue (living with it)
3. the 3rd gear (crunch) as many here refer to it (living with it)
3. the left side radio cut out (soon to be fixed)
4. squeaks and rattles from the dash (living with it)

There may be more that I'm missing but thats what I've experienced so far.

I had some bad cold start problems for about 2 years and $1500. before I found it was the upper intake plenium gasket. Dealership was going to charge $500 but one of my friends was a mechanic at infinti and did it for $100. Other than that I have replaced the starter twice, cv joints, flex pipe, 02 sensor, harmonic balancer, engine mount and all 6 coil packs<-(most common for 5th gen). Hope this helps.

Well, i searched "common problems" in this forum and read the faq and didn't come up with anything conclusive. Like I said, I am looking at one from a used car lot and wanted to check common problems out before buying it. Thanks for everyone's suggestions and help so far.

Sorry that I ruined your day by having to read this post soonerfan, or are you just still bitter about the WV trouncing?.... lol.

there arent any threads called "common problems"
however, 90% of the threads are about problems....look around.

please stop being lazy...and then running your mouth for no reason. if your team didnt beat mine, you comments dont mean a thing.

Doesn't sound like anything major occurs other than TSB's and little annoying rattles. So that's good news.

What're "you comments". I have several teams, none of them did anything impressive though... lol. I think the Sooners might win a few more games if they focused just a slight bit more on ED-you-kay-shun.

but I digress....

I found it easier to pinpoint common issues/problems with the 4th Gen that I used to own. But simply put, you don't HAVE to read every post do you? I could read all day about people's problems with their Maxima's but that doesn't mean that they are common. Thanks for your input though, I'll take it into consideration.

typical person demanding to be spoonfed then throwing a fit when it doesnt happen.
the info is there....you do the research...instead of demanding that we do it for you.

Ummmm... i don't see a "fit" anywhere in there... I asked, some people mentioned their problems and I noted them.... great. didn't you see me thank the people for their input? or can you actually read all the words? maybe just the ones with one syllable? stop marrying your cousin's down there! See that was what we call a joke, I dunno why I bother with sarcasm with you... you won't get it even though you're 32.

As I stated, I DID and continue to do some reading up on 5th Gen's. If you don't want to help, simply DON'T. There's always someone like you on a forum.... an iBully? lol. On a serious note though, I saw the pics of your Max, it's pretty nice.

If you look at the main 5th gen form page there are literally 75% of the posts, containing problems that people have had, and within a 30 second search of the 5th gen forums...

http://forums.maxima.org/search.php?searchid=98242

More then 3 threads about problems that occur with the 5th Gen Maxima.

I may not have a 1000 posts... but that is because 99% of my time is spent searching... the little amount of money spent to be able to search really has not hurt me at all...

We really need to consolidate these "I'm buying a 5th/5.5 Gen, what should I look out for?" threads....
