Poll: Still with original Automatic Transmission?
I am trying to predict how reliable my AT will be, given the fact that i've done regular flushes and i am at 105k miles. Car is '03 Maxima SE.
Please, only 5 and 5.5 gen Maxima owners with AT.
If you would like to provide any details....feel free.
Thanks!

You do realize that it is the same transmission across 4th, 5th, 5.5 and first year of 6th (2004)...
My recommendation is to search within the 4th and 5th gen section, for Transmission Problems...
I got 7 results on the first page...

If you take care of it, it's very reliable for the most part. Jime went 12.4 on his (stock, IIRC) auto. DR mod, of course.
Many others have put high power and low ETs through their autos, and had them last.

I am on #2, of my own choice (replacing the 02 with an 04) after some third gear crunch problems got a little bad.. I also have a 6-speed which is notorious for having 3rd gear crunch, and this rebuild we did... that was just to clean off the magnet :-P

118,300 miles on mine, shifts well. Shifts are a touch soft when the transmission/engine is cold but have improved noticably since I did two drain and fills on my transmission (the fluid smelled good but was really dirty).

I've got a 2000 Infiniti I30, which is basically a Maxima. I've got around 141,000 miles on the original auto. I've got quite a bit of slipping between shifts. I don't have any slipping at other times though. Hopefully it's just the TCM. The previous owner of this car didn't take too good of care of it, so I wouldn't be surprised if it needs a rebuild in the near future.. My old car, a 96 Maxima that got totaled over the summer, had just over 200,000 on the original transmission with no problems. Man I miss that car....

Trust me, you don't want black paint-it isn't a color, it is a part time job!
Grey Lustre like I have is as dark as I will ever get again.

I replaced mine before 150K. Mine had the shift solenoid problem in the first tranny but I wanted the AE auto so I got one used. Which turned out to be bad. Got the AE one rebuilt and added the Stage II VB.

From the votes so far... looks like some people had to rebuild/replace AT before they hit 150k miles, however there are quite a few org members that are still running fine on stock AT or have slipping/rough shifts but the cars still run...for weeks, if not longer.
This makes me feel good. I am aware that sooner or later, ANY AT will fail, even a well maintained one. The only thing that i fear is one of these..."all of a sudden, little or no warning" AT failures....that leave you on the side of the road or in a parking lot.
I have two friends with 2000+ Acura TL ...and they both had multiple "surprise" AT failures that required a tow truck. I know, Acura TLs are famous with their weak AT...and i REALLY hope that a 5 Gen Maxima has a better built, more robust AT that can last longer....even if it's not in perfect shape.

On the other hand, the transmission in my Accord was flaring on the 2-3 up and down shifts for about 25,000 miles before the transmission finally went.
Grand_hustle17-seems to be a common complaint. Slips or soft shifts when cold, shifts perfect once it warms up.

I've got 60K miles and ive only drain/fill the tranny once and shifts like its new.
