grinding noise

I have a grinding noise that just started. Its coming from the front passenger side wheel area. I can hear it slightly while driving normal. But it gets much worse when im braking. The sound goes away when i turn the wheel to the right. I checked the brake pads and rotors and saw nothing wrong with them. No grooves in the rotors, pads are like new. I also looked around to see if there could be anything else rubbing against something, but found nothing. Nothing feels loose and no play in the wheel. Im thinking maybe a wheel bearing is going bad. It was raing last night and the noise was much worse. Anyone have any ideas on what it could be?

The struts were just replaced about 2 months ago at the Nissan dealer.

is it a grinding noise or more of a groan, if its a wheel bearing you can hear the noise change in pitch as your turning the wheel. So if you were to weave your car left to right you should hear a change in the sound.

Sounds like grinding to me. It doesnt really change pitch, just comes and goes.

is maybe the dust sheild rubbing against the rotor? or maybe a loose shim from the brake pads rubbing against the rotor?

Maybe cheap brake pads?

If it the brakes were actually grinding (no pad material left), you'd feel it through the brake pedal.

It hasent made the sound in the past 2 days. So i dont know whats going on with it. But now it sounds like something is loose in the front end at the same wheel. My car is a 6 speed and when i shift, I sometimes hear a klunk. Im going to take it to the garage and see if they can find anything.

Hey man, I have the same problem and I can tell you it will only get worse. Its surprising because for me I noticed it alot more when it was raining as well, I still haven't fixed the problem because whenever I want someone to check it out, it wont make the noise. But now I probably could, because I can hear it much more often, and now I notice it even if im driving straight, or turning the wheel. It especially will get bad in the mornings when its cold too... I know for a fact that I have bad rotors because I stop unsteadily, kind of in chunks, but im too busy with my sound system for right now. Let me know if you find out the problem, good luck.

Ill keep you posted. I wanted to stop at the garage today to have it looked at, and of course it wasnt making the noise. Ill wait till it rains again and see if it comes back. then ill stop and have it looked at.

bad caliper is my guess as well...either the piston is not fully retracting or your slider pins are corroded and hanging up! Pull your wheels off next time and rotate the rotors by hand if possible!

You sure all your Pad spring clips are installed? They hold the pad off the rotor! When I said rotate by hand, that was to listen for any rubbing not checking for a hard frozen caliper piston, which would have caught on fire by now! If you start your engine and turn your steering wheel both & forth @ a stand still...Is there any noise? Also on your pads R these little wear alarms (Tabs)...you sure they aren't rubbing against the rotor?

the spring clipa are in place and the pads are still like new. the noise is only when the car is moving. it gets worse when i turn the wheel to the left, but goes away when i turn the wheel to the right. I can also hear it when i apply the brakes. It does it the most when the car is cold. as the car warms up the noise isnt as noticable.

I have the same problem, a grinding noise when I turn left coming from the front passenger wheel. The sound goes away when I turn to the right or drive straight. The noise isnt really noticeable when it's dry outside but soon as it rains its as loud as ever. Funnily this all started within a week after I took my car in to get my brakes checked. I dont see a tear in the front passanger cv boot. If you figure anything out please keep me posted.

The issue has not been resolved yet. But i did take 2 mechanics out for a ride in my car and they seem to think its a brake issue. Now on top of the grinding noise in the front end, the rear brake caliper seems to be freezing up. So now i have to get that replaced. Its just never ending with my car. Im seriously considering trading it in.

I was in the same situation as you guys and took my car in and they noticed right away it was a wheel bearing. Mine was so bad to the point my axel had damage and the wheel itself was moveable with the car raised....I'm sure you can check yourself by jacking your car up, just push on your wheel and jerk it around, if it seems loose, its probably the wheel bearing....

If you live in the snow belt the noise could be caused by a ridge of rust at the outer edge of your rotor. This ridge can be removed by removing the wheel and lightly hitting the edge of the rotor with a ball peen hammer. You should consider servicing your brakes and lube your caliper sliders and pad contact points with a high temperature silicone brake lube to eliminate the brakes as the cause.

there is no rust on the rotors. The pads and rootors are practically brand new. The garage is going to make sure the rotors are not warped and they are going to lube everything up.

see the first time i took my car in the front passenger wheel did move but then the guy took the wheel off and tightened a huge bolt in the center and the movement went away. I wish I could be more technical. Its not making a lot of noise but then again it hasn't rained in a while, when it makes the most noise. I guess time will tell.

i'm telling you my problem acted up in the rain as well, started off the same way, only when i turned a certain direction. After a few weeks it made the noise more often, daily, and then it happened even while driving straight. Evolved into a noise constantly, and on right turns it would grind very nastily. Wheel bearing. If i fixed it at your point it would have cost 200$ less.

dam you haven't that problem yet! Want me to fly out to your location! More than likely it's your wheel hub bearing! Jack up your car and place a large screwdriver or jack handle under the wheel parallel with axle and lift or have somone else lift as you feel fun play @ the hub or other associated components!

I would suggest you pay to have someone inspect your front end! Are you sure it's not your drivebelts getting wet and making noises since it only happens when there's moisture present?

it happens when its sunny out too, just not as bad. The shop went over all the brakes, the clunking noise is still there. There has to be something loose. I hear a clunk when i let the clutch out to start moving. I also hear it when im cruising and step on the gas and let off.

My friend at the store i work at, who is a mechanic by trade said for me to bleed my brakes. he seems to think that there is an air bubble in the system and that as the barometric pressure changes its making the brakes drag a little bit. im going to bleed them on thursday or friday and see if it helps any.

Well with the latest description you just release....It sounds like either you driveshaft cv's or your clutch/pressure plate assembly if it's making a....... clunk!!!! Are you sure this is the same sound as B4? The thread started with a grinding noise! Where are you? I'm in Houston.....I can fix it! Ship it to me Fedex!!!!

My max is an auto, so its not the clutch. I'm getting it looked at in thursday morning. if they can't figure it out ill let you know. I really think its a dragging brake pad. i dont think its a cv joint because im not getting a clunk sound its just a metallic gridning and from what my friends heard by walking next to my car as a drive its definitly something in the brakes.
