break-in period

i have been through all the treads and there wasn't a one on the break-in period. i have 700 miles on mine and i have been driving it like a baby. i figure once its gets to 1,500 and i get the oil changed i'll start to get on it. but i talked to the service guy and he said just drive like you regularly do. so what is everyone take on this?

Just follow what it says in your manual. You don't need to get an early oil-change. Just follow the manual

When I got my Max they told me to allow 1000 - 1500 miles for break-in. After that time you can drive it normally. They told me that my first oil change was scheduled for 3500 miles. So I don't think you'll need to get one till then. I have about 2100 on my max now.

You may not absolutely NEED an early oil change to meet warranty requirements, but it's cheap insurance against anything not flushed out during the engine manufacture/assembly circulating around through the oil pump, bearings, etc. Stuff WILL get past the filter if the bypass opens up. Plus the first few hundred miles generate somewhat more finely divided debris as all the moving parts wear in to microscopically compatible surfaces - where do you think that it goes?

Yes, I'm conservative when it comes to breaking in a new engine, most probably because I've assembled a few and really hate to re-do things. My AE got oil & filter changes at about 700, 2800, 5800, and is nearly due again at 8500. Keep it under 3500 rpm and avoid long periods of constant rpm's for the first 1000 miles and stay out of full throttle and/or redline for another 1500. As evidence, my '87 went 170,000 miles and never used more than about 1 qt of oil in 2500 miles (I'm definitely not a conservative driver, neither was my son, and my wife was the one who first found out about the 7000 rpm fuel shutoff on that car).

thanks for the advice. i am going to get the early oil change to get rid of any other metal shavings. i have always broke in my cars like this, but this is my first foreign car.(hate to say that word) i thought i would never buy foreign. first time for everything. thanks again.

I had the same question too because when I bought my car they told me that 800miles should be good enough of a break-in period. They also told me to change my oil when it hits 1500miles, then 3000miles there after...
