Wheel bearing going bad again?

I am getting this rotational noise out of my front passenger side wheel. I can hear it distinctly at low speeds and when braking. It happens when I am not braking too, so the brakes aren't it. Sometimes it sounds like rubber rubbing against something, other times it sounds purely mechanical.
When I am traveling along at pretty low speeds I can hear a distinct rotational noise from that side. I had the wheel bearing replaced on that front passenger wheel about 2 or so years ago. Could it be going out again? Not sure what else could be making that noise at low speeds when the wheel is turning?

It's possible that it could be the wheel bearing. Can you find a parking lot and do some big circles. If you're able to lessen the noise when you're turning one way then likely it's the wheel bearing (on the opposite side of the turn)

You should also get down there and inspect everything. Perhaps a CV boot is ripped or grease is leaking from somewhere, that could also help diagnose

Yeah, will try that. Forgot about getting the hands at 12 and 6 and seeing if there is any play.

Is it some kind of whisper around here?

The Max has it's uses.

Anyone else had this noise at low speeds and it been anything other than the bearing?

If it sounds like a constant whirring noise, its the wheel bearing. I just changed both of my front ones and my driver side wheel hub because it was practically crumbling. Sometimes its very evident at low speeds and braking.

That's mainly when I hear it, at low speeds and when braking after going 50-70 mph. Damn passenger side again. Wonder if the hub is bad?

could mostly likely be a bearing.

...that was my first thought, since you replaced it just two years ago....
I'm not sure if I'm happy or horrified that my wheel bearing AND hub were replaced?! --but at least I know they're BOTH new--

1. how are your tires? My Proxes4 always sound like a bad bearing at low speeds once they get worn down pretty good....

2. tell me again why you are EVER driving the Maxima anymore with an M3 in the garage? Geez man, get your money's worth out of the M3

I have fairly new snow tires on the Max right now. I have heard them make their own noise, and they make plenty, but this doesn't seem to be the case. Plus, I only hear it out of one side.

The Max has it's purposes.

I have almost the same problem as yourself. When I start to drive out of my driveway at 5mph, I here noise from the drivers side wheel. I changed out my rotors & pads along with a allignment but the noise is still there at low speeds. Especially when I'm turning. What seems to be the problem? Sounds like I have an identical problem.

I had the same sound. Apparently the rotor was rubbing on the caliper when there was a load on it due to the bearing not sitting correctly in the hub. Just replaced my bearing and hub yesterday and the noise is gone.

If you don't mind me asking. How much was that to replace and did you do it at the dealership?

Sure, but I'm in Germany so prices are really high. I got it done at the dealership for 155 Euro's (almost 250 bucks). I usually buy the parts in the states cause you pay quite a bit more for them here too. Not really many options here and with the exchange rate any work is gonna cost you. Quite honestly I'd do it my self if I had the resources.

i had the same problem a couple days ago. First my car was making like a whirring noise on occasion and in addition my rear right brake was worn out (again after replacing it less than 6 months ago). turns out the whirring was a worn out bearing and the ridiculous wearing down of the brake pads was to a bad rotor

Have you got it fixed and How much did the dealership charge you to fix the bearings?

Finally got the car up in the air. Passenger front wheel definately has movement when grasped at 12 and 6. Driver's side doesn't.
So, is it guaranteed to be the bearing? Seems to making more noise now as well. Could the hub be bad as well since this bearing has gone bad in 2.5 years? Need to know if I need to just get the bearing replaced or the hub as well. Will be having a shop do this work.

It is highly probable.
no guaranteed way to know about the hub until the mech pulls the assembly apart - it all depends on how long the bearing has been bad, and driving conditions.
Both my bearing and hub were toast. Both cost near $100 ea. + labor, but you can have the mech SHOW you the hub if it's bad, just to be sure.
If the hub is shot - he won't be able to repress the new bearing in...just that simple.

Not sure how many miles you have on yr max, but SOME have reported that the dealer actually warranteed bad bearings under powertrain warr., and had it done for free!
I pd an ind. shop $400 for ONE hub and bearing. I almost wished I went to the stealer....and I cannot even believe I just said that!!!

good luck, and keep us posted on the repair.

gr

**btw - it was my pass. front wheel as well.

yes, that sounds like it is definitely the bearing. The hub "could" be bad too.

My suggestion: Have the old bearing pressed out and check the hub bore for wear. If it's worn, go to a junkyard and just buy a whole used hub assembly. I've done it twice, for about $40 each. Try to find one off a low-mileage wreck. Both my front hubs are junkyard parts and hav been trouble-free.

Best bet: take the entire hub/spindle off yourself and take it to a shop for the new bearing (part from DaveB). It should cost you 20-30 bucks to have them press out the old one and press the new one in. If you hve a shop do the entire job, theyll charge you $300-400 for the labor of removing everything. And since you have another car it won't be a problem to have your car on jack stands for a day or two, right?

Good stuff. Thanks guys.
Car has 105k miles.

Irish, how involved is it to remove the entire hub/spindle. Haven't done that before.

Well, got the bearing replaced while having my new Yokohoma's put on from Tire Rack. $315 for the bearing replacement.

Noise is gone. Def seems to have been the culprit.
