check your oil level make sure it's ok.
try better oil.
if still, replace the tensioner.

oil level is good. I check it regularly. I use mobile 1 synthetic with mobile 1 filter usually. has been doing this for 10k miles or so probably. tensioner was my guess but i would think that would sound more like a constant noise instead of this ticking. I know other people have been having these same problems. I just haven't found anyone like mine. I'm thinking some of my noise is my headers maybe? bad gaskets. I don't even know where to start... ahhh i want a new car.

my car has ticking noise when cold, and I can hear it from the passanger wheel side.
it lasts about 3 minutes.

It sounds like an excessive "valve clearance" issue more than any noise generated by the timing chain/s. Did it just start suddenly or was it progressive? I think you'd be better off checking all the cam lobes and followers (buckets) for obvious signs of wear and checking all the valve clearances first, after removing the camshaft covers, AND before buying any parts. Has it ever been run low on oil, or had the LOP light come on when the engine was running?

I guess i should have included this in my first post...

funny (not really) store actually about that.... i rebuilt the car about 3 years ago. Front end collision. front bumper, hood, little inner structure, left fender, airbags, all that good stuff. I was installing the airbags and changing the oil at the same time. When i got the airbag module installed i was in a hurry and started the car to see if the airbag light was off. Well After about 5-10 seconds of it idling it hits me that i had the oil drained and shut the car off quick.

I would imagine that probably has something to do with my problem. That happened at around 28k miles and it has 75k on it now. It has gradually gotten worse and i didn't notice anything drastic right after that. I got a compression check at about 40k when one of the butterfly valve screwed backed out and went into the engine and it all checked out fine. Thankfully i was idling in my driveway and not going down the highway at the time.

So now. I'm going to just say that my ticking is a result of my no oil incident. What would need replacing worst case senario? Would it be better to just drive this till it's gone and start looking for a used motor?

Yup, that probably explains it then. It doesn't take much running without oil pressure and thus no oil getting to the cams and cam followers to damage the case hardening of the cam lobes and bucket contact surfaces, which will then allow relatively rapid wear, causing an increase of valve clearances beyond specs, and the resulting "ticking".

Had the same thing happened to an Intrepid that blew a timing belt and caused one valve to hit the head. Screwed the clearances on the valve and caused a loud ticking. Ran for 20K miles till the bottom end went. I honestly wouldn't worry if it is not getting worse by the mile.

Thanks guys, So without actually looking at the motor it could possibly be just the camshafts and replacing them along with inspecting everything else could fix it? Would there be any possibility of valve damage done? or would it be something you wouldn't know until its tore down?

a tensioner noise would be more like a rapping noise.
if you said your mainafolds or gaskets are leaking i would look into those first. Those could cause that noise (tick tick)
I would also get a better opinion from a shop and go from there as you might have to really narrow it down....

i just looked at one of the front cams while it was running and it is wobbling about 1/8 inch. Is this normal? shouldn't they be balanced? i could get a video if someone wants to see what i'm talking about. Could running with no oil for a few seconds cause this?

Edit-

Here's a video

wow you got *****! DOn't do that stuff bud, you are potentially putting metal shavings from your screwdriver in engine.

it looked and sounded a lot worse than what it was. I have a feeling i have more than a few metal shavings in my engine. So does anyone know if it's supposed to do that?

you can't really see that from video but cam will only be perfect in journals where it rides onto head otherwise it is not perfectly "round" everywhere.
But the noise is not good though

thanks guys. i think i've pretty much pinned it down to valves/something around there. Now is there a common fix for this or do i just need to have it rebuilt? not sure where to go with it now.

ok i take that back. Now i'm thinking it's my injectors now that i got a chance to look at it better. why are they so loud?! I know all are noisy but why are mine so loud? I have some noticable hesitation at 3k-5k rpm could that be related? If so why an i not pulling any codes for that? Anyone with experience does it sound like just one injector or all of them?

Injectors are not ever going to be that loud or make that specific "metal on metal" type sound. This "hashy" (an old expression) sound caused by excessive valve clearance (lash) is still what I think this sound is, as I mentioned above. You just cannot afford to run an engine for any length of time (and I'm not talking start up here) with no oil pressure, and undoubtedly damage has been done to this engine. What's this about "shavings"? Any kind of visible metal in the oil drained out of an engine is never going to have a good outcome. If you have excessive valve clearances like I suspect then you will also have decreased valve "lift" which may be the reason for your performance issue at the higher RPMs.

well looking at it and sticking a screwdriver to my ear to pinpoint the sound i still think it's coming from my fuel rail. I can stick it anywhere and kind of hear the noise but when i stick it on my fuel rail or injector i can tell that is whats making the noise. I'm sure that not having my engine cover on and also having a carbon fiber hood with no liner doesn't help it. I'm going to put my grounding wire closer to the injectors and run some seafoam through the gas and see if that helps.
