5th gen 5sp's how good are they?

Just curious, are there any differences between the 5th gen 5sp and the 4th gen 5sp?

I have a 4th gen with 175,000 miles on it and it looks like the input shaft bearings, throw out bearing, and differential bearings are shot, probably the output shaft bearing as well considering just about ever other bearing in the transmission is going.

Are 5th gen transmissions more durable than the 4th gen as far as this goes? I am thinking it may be cheaper and less hassle to just hit a junkyard and get a 5th gen 5sp with 100Kish miles on it and just swap it out. Would swapping the transmissions be fairly straightforward? I imagine everything should be the same right?

i'm pretty sure they use the same tranny.. no more or less durable.. you'd just be getting a newer transmission

they are the same tannys
yes your better off with a newer one but the clutch is the biggest problem so if you swap no matter the age put a new clutch before you swap

I found the 4th gen 5 speed transmission to shift much better than my 03's 6 speed. I had a '97 Maxima with the 5 speed, and shifting it was a dream. My 03 6 speed doesn't shift nearly as well.

Just food for thought, as you look through your transmission options.

He said 5th gen and 5MT, not 5.5 and 6MT. Comparing RS6F51? and RS5F05? is apples and oranges. That's rod vs cable linkages for you.

OP: Virtually the same, some minor differences. Find the newest one you can in your budget, basically. If you get a 5th gen 5MT and just bolt it up your shifter will be a bit off, but that can be remedied.

haha, no ****, the 5.5gen is using a cable for shifting? WTF... no wonder why when I drove a 03 SpecV and it sucked... lol.. it was so notchy and hard to nav though the gears. My 5spd is nice.
