Swapping VIN plates on dashboard

i recently did a interior swap, and switched out my brown dashboard for a black one. my question is how would i go about taking off the VIN on the original dash and putting it on the new one...assuming there is a way.

any input is appreciated. if this thread violates anything, i can delete it right away.

I cut the old dashboard since I was throwing itout and then just drilled teh rivets out for the new one and replaced it with the old. That was on my S14.

Probably the easiest way to do it - drill rivets, get some pop rivets and put it back in the new dash.

i figured that. in all my joy of swapping, i didn't think to do it while both dashboards were out of the car.

i wasn't sure if there was some sort of allen wrench or something that could accomplish it, seeing how i could do it with the dash in the car.

^Yeah, but that wil raise suspicion if ever noticed. I haven't removed a Maxima dash, but if it isn't to hard that still your best bet. If its difficult however......Superglue FTW.

VIN Plate

Guys, being a law enforcement officer (State Trooper in Ohio), I hate to be the bearer of bad news. You cannot just remove the VIN from your old dash and place it in the location vacated by the replacement dash's VIN plate. The rivets used by the manufacturer are special and are used as but one of several theft deterrent features when producing a car. I would advise you to contact the State Police or Highway Patrol in your state to inquire about the procedure of swapping the dash and the VIN-related issue.

In Ohio, such a swap without an inspection and applicable fees could result in the seizure of your car while the matter is sorted out. Just trying to save you some possible trouble.

This is why I cut mine out of my old dash so as to not damage the rivets, and I drilled the new one out to not damage the new dash. When I replaced it with the old one, the rivet were in tact and I just had to force them through. Once in they looked Identical because the tops had not been touched. (I lived in Ohio)

thanks for the law side input. for now, the car isn't due for inspections for another year or so, and i still have the original dashboard. i'll have to call the DPS here in CT and figure it out.
