New Air Filter Improves Mileage

Hi All,

I haven't posted much on here lately but I thought I'd share some thoughts that I'm sure most of you may already know...

I used to have an 01 Max with 5 spd that was totaled in December, it used to get pretty good gas mileage...almost 29-30 MPG when I drove slow. I replaced this car with an 03 Titanium Automatic. I was really excited to get a Max with more horsepower. After a couple of months the mileage really tanked, no more than 20 MPG even when I drove slow. I figured it was the winter temperatures so I didnt' do anything until last month when the car started running really sluggish. I noticed the air filter was really filthy so I replaced it with a new one. I noticed the gas mileage went way up, I regularly get 24-25 MPG now in mixed highway/local driving. Lesson learned for me to keep up to date on regular maintenance.

yeah, it's pretty much common knowledge that replacing a filthy air filter will improve gas mileage.. lol.. you'll find that alot of little things improve gas mileage though.. make sure your tire pressure is correct.. depending on the mileage, you might wanna change your spark plugs.. you'll see an automatic drop in mileage because you're going from a 5-speed to an automatic tranny though.. not too much you can do about that.. just out of curiosity, how much knowledge do you have about cars on a scale of 1-10 (with 10 being a pro)?

SoonerFan - Thanks for the "compliment". Do you really find it necessary to reply to just about every posting on this website?

I'm probably a 5. I realize changing an air filter should be done regularly and is nothing special. But I was surprised that I got that much of a gain in the gas mileage out something so simple.

yeah.. its cause the air filter helps the engine breathe, and it doesnt have to work as hard to run when there's a clear breathing path.. which helps it run more efficiently.. kinda like a runner who smokes and has his/her lungs clogged up with smoke and all that garbage.. they can't breathe as well as a non-smoker who has clear lungs

"YES HE DOES." He has over 22k postings and I'm willing to bet that 8k plus are BS posts such as the "compliment" he gave you. Some people just have to be known for something whether its being an A-hole, engines, detailing or being the parts guy. Each site has its SoonerFan, you gotta love em.

Note: This worthless post brings my count to 585.

I understand why Sooner responds the way he does. When you get a retarded poster like the one who posted this thread, you get a stupid answer.
