Opinions: Tantrums and Kumho - 17's & 18's
I'm looking at the Kumho ECSTA Supra tires 235/35 or 235/40 on either the Tantrums 17"x8" or 18"x8" respectively. It seems like clearance and odometer/speedometer error will be close to the same.
Anybody?
Y2KevSE: What made you choose the 17"x8" Tantrums over the 18"x8"? Had you already invested in the tires? Accuracy of the speedometer? The appearance after you slammed it with the GCs?

I'm stock with the 17's. Why do you ask? Just for the bolt pattern? Or are you a buyer?

According to Whalen, the stock 17's with the Potenzas turn 780 revolutions per mile. The 17" Konigs with the Kumho turn 797, and the 18" with Kumho's turn 794.
Looks like the 18's will be closest to accurate. They would register an extra 1,794 miles after 100,000 real miles.

I was just wondering what tire size would be closest to you for stock. There is a tire calculator listed in the FAQ sticky thread up top.... also, I have an excel spreadsheet:

Still nobody volunteering with their thoughts on 17" vs. 18"? I'm leaning toward the 18's myself.

Re: go for the 18's
I think the only choice is 18. I mean if you're gunna spend the money to get new wheels why not get something that's going to be different enough to notice.
Secondly, I can't imagine why you wouldn't get 245/40x18s instead of the 235s. Seems from what others have reported 245s will not cause problems and they will also be almost identical in height to the stock 225/50x17s.
As for the Kumhos, I've had a set on my SC400 (245/45x17 front, 275/40x17 rear) for the past year and think they're great. When you consider the cost I think Kumhos are the best kept secret in tires these days.
Lastly, a question. If one had a choice in offset (I'm planning on 18x8 black opal Verdicts with 245/40x18 Kumhos for my gray '02 SE 6 speed) would you go with 45mm or 40mm. I'm thinking 35mm offset would be pushing the envelop a little far.
Cheers, Paul.
