Knock sensor replacement on Cali spec engine?

I had a code for a knock sensor. As i reached for the harness to the knock sensor and discovered it was burned and is no longer attached to the sensor. I tried getting to the sensor but it is blocked by some part. It has an arch shaped hose. Does anyone know what part is blocking the sensor? Is it an EGR valve, a swirl vavle, or something else. Theres is no room to even unscrew the bolts that hold this part since its under the manifold in a tunnel like space.

I used a 18" and 6"(1/4" drive) extensions with a universal swivel and a 12 mm socket to remove it off a fellow orgster' 97 Max , loosened it and then remove it with a telscopic magnet! Took about 15 minutes to remove and install. installing I aligned the sensor over the bolt hole then used some mechnical fingers to drop the bolt in the hole and hand started with the 24" of extension with the universal and 12mm socket!

i tried getting tools in there, but there is a part blocking it. The sensor sits behind it.

Is it totally impossible from the accessory side of the engine? You may have to remove that component, I haven't seen one of the cali spec 5th Gens.

Diagram of the part blocking the KS.

I found the name of the part and a diagram. It called a Cylinder block water outlet. Before I remove the upper intake manifold, anyone know how to avoid removing the manifold to gain access to the KS on 2000-2001 models? thanks

I've got a Fed 03 I've always wondered want the hell the square boss was for, it's not open but the casting is there as well as the threaded holes! I see your dilemma now!
You might try remove the right motor mount upper brace (3 bolts) and try sneaking in thru that void! A long extension w/swivel & a retractable magnet should work. You may have to push it in thru the trans side since the fender may be in the way....Good luck!!!

I recently replace my Knock Sensor and KS harness on my 2000 Cali Spec Max. I removed the Air Filter and MAF. I removed the heater hose that goes across the top of the tranny (manual). I removed the thermostat housing, the hose, and the outlet housing to the engine block (the one you have indicated on the picture). Remember to buy the gasket for the outlet housing. That outlet housing was tough. You will need to remove the hose from the outlet housing. This will give you just enough room to get a 1/4" universal to the back two bolts (4 total). Oh, you will need a magnet. I used a tiny magnet tied to a piece of string. Once the outlet housing is out, the KS is easy to access. Also, be sure to put something into the opening of the engine block so nothing falls in.

After the KS/KS harness were replaced, my car's gas mileage went way up (19 to 23 city mpg). Regained significant low end power (2 - 4k rpms)

For all that have low gas mileage and power loss at the low end, check for P0325 code. My code reader did not pick up the code. It is a ghost code so it will not trigger the CEL.

FYI, it was my KS harness that was definitely bad. I think my KS was still operational, but I replaced it anyway.

Outlet housing gasket - NISSAN P/N 11062-4P100 ~$3
KS Harness - NISSAN P/N 24079-2Y000 ~$27
KS - Dropped shipped by NISSANPARTSDIRECT no P/N available ~$151
