Tranny popping out of overdrive on the highway

A buddy of mine has a 2001 GLE. A few weeks ago he was driving on the highway with the cruise control on. Then all of a sudden the car switched out of overdrive into 3rd gear. He said he pulled off the highway and turned the car off and immediately restarted it and it was still in overdrive-off mode. He then turned the car off and let it sit for a few minutes and then the car would go into overdrive. Since then the car has been fine, but there was a service engine soon light on. He had the code read out and it was something to do with transmission shaft. Any ideas on the problem here? Is the tranny going out on the car?

He said the car drives fine now and will go into overdrive.

Take it to your mechanic to get it looked at. I bought my son a used 06 Kia Optima and it did the same thing. I took it to my trusted mechanic and it turns out the overdrive module was faulty. It was a cheap fix, $80 but if he had kept driving on it, it would have ruined his transmission. I hope this helps you.
