Any 5.5 6mts with a Y pipe? Need some impressions

I am planning on getting a Warpspeed Stainless Y pipe (cattman no longers makes y pipes for the 5.5 gen). I have recently purchased a cattman catback. I was wondering if it is very loud with both the y-pipe and the exhaust? Also if anyone does have a cattman y pipe in good shape they are thinking of getting rid of let me know.

I had Cattman y-pipe before. The difference in exhaust tone and volume is marginal. Power wise, you'll feel a little bit of a difference, but it's definitely not like getting headers.

Did you also have the cattman catback? I should state that I am aware that headers would net me more power than a y pipe but for my goals for the car a Y-pipe will do just fine. The main reason for not wanting headers is the complications around the install, it is very costly (I was quoted around $500) and makes it very unappealing to me. I would rather get the y-pipe since the install is simpler. I think the 7-9whp is sufficent.

Puppetmaster did you already sell your cattman y-pipe?

I thought about the same thing.. but it's a matter of 7-9whp vs 27-29whp. That twenty ponies makes a huge difference. Plus, no more pre-cats that will die on you. Of course, the only thing worse than a complicated install, is a complicated UNINSTALL come smog check time, and if you're crazy, another complicated REINSTALL. Plus there's the matter of an AFC and some dyno time to get it all dialed in.

However, everytime I see this video, it makes me want headers.

Well look at it like this a Warpspeed Stainless Y pipe will set you back $250 shipped and provide 7-9whp. The average DIYer like me will be able to install it.Assuming I pay some $50 to install it that would bring me to grand total for $300. Again assuming I get 9whp. My approx cost would be $33.00 per whp.

Headers on the other hand are going for $830+shipping (let say $50)+Install( I was qouted 400-600. We will use $500 for this example)+ I need 02 sims or to have bungs welded into the B-pipe after the cat ($100) depending on what you decide. So based on my calculations headers will set me back approx. $1480.00. Assuming I gain 25whp. That is approx $60.00 per whp.

I am not knocking headers in anway. I just don't feel that its worth it to me. Truth be told the only reason I am thinking about getting a ypipe is because my stock y pipe isn't in the best shape (the mesh covering the flex is torn).

However since I have purchased a cattman catback I am concerned that the Y-pipe/ Catback maybe obnoxiously loud. So i figured i would inquire.

For now, I am probably going with a y-pipe as well. I've love to get the additional 20 hp with headers, but for the same reasons (emissions, much more involved install), I think I'll pass for now on headers. Might go with a UDP and when I change plugs, the phenolic intake spacers. That ought to make up some of the difference.

I had the warpspeed Y-pipe for a while before getting the Hotshot headers. It made the car a little raspier and louder but not too bad. If you're replacing a damaged Y-pipe it's a good mod but I don't think it's worth it if you're going for power. I didn't notice much, if anything, from it. The headers definately made a difference but you're right about the cost and difficulty of install.

I can't say how it will be with the louder muffler since I'm still running with the stock muffler. The stock muffler on the 02 and up cars is really good for power.

Hear you on the cost of headers deal, I just sold the set of HotShots I got used last weekend because I came to the realization for a nice DD like a Maxima is, it is plenty quick/fast without headers. There was no way I could justify the amount of work just to get the headers legit enough for inspection as well as the tuning to "optimize". My heatshield recently took a dump on my y-pipe as well, I may consider a y-pipe and new high flow converter in the future. Let us know how it turns out if/when you do get the y pipe on there.

Sorry, didn't mean to start the header vs. y-pipe debate again. I understand completely, but just thought I should mention it so that you have all the info, not that you didn't already know. At one point in time, I did think that the y-pipe would be enough.

Anyways, I had the y-pipe (it has been sold for a number of years now) with a Frankencar catback and with a Greddy Evo catback.

I don't think anyone ever doubted the gains to be had from headers, that gain is great for someone "going all out" to try and squeeze all available power out of their maxima.

I think I may go this route too. I'm just not interested in the install, cost and noise of a set of headers. My wish list consist of a SAFC, 3"maf pipe, y pipe and technosqr ecu. I already have an intake currently, exhaust and SSIM. With the wishlist totalling $1K, thats plenty for me. The car is already quicker than my old GTS.

I have a Cattman Ypipe that will be replaced in a month or 2 with my Cattman headers that I've had for about 6 months or so. I'm trying to finish my 1990 maxima project first b4 jumping into these Header install. I'll keep you posted if you're not in a extreme rush!
I like my Cattman ypipe and cattman exhaust system sound, so doesn't all my fellow Org'rs.....

If Zack342 can't wait and ends up w a Wrpspeed y I'll be glad to take the cattman off your hands. I already have the cattman cattback on my 02' and will eventually have to replace the factory y. So I'm not in any hurry. Thnks
