How to know if my maf is no good

I searched and found nothing sorry if this is a repost i found much info on mafs going bad, but never knowing how they go bad. Its time for my vehicle inspection and im worried that it might fail due to maf problems as ive heard with other people. My gas mileage is good and my acclelration is good but when I start it up the rps go low for a second then back to normal. It has never stalled becuase of this but I need this car to pass inspection. Thanks

Sounds more like a IACV problem than a MAF problem....or a small vacuum leak.

if there is no SES light, you should be able to pass the inspection.

How about a Pending code.

Can they fail you for a pending code that has not yet set the SES indicator light?

I have an intermittant pending P0171 that comes and goes during the last year.

It may set the SES indicator light after many thousands of miles.

I brought it to Nissan this month and they found no codes stored and it passed inspection.

I have cleaned the MAF and still getting an inetrmittant pending code.

I intend to install a new MAF.

I assume that a soft code indicates that there may be a problem, but not enough to fail the emissions test if the SES is not illuminated?

What year? My 01 was doing this back in march, but it was actually stalling. I thought it was the IACV, but it turns out it was the MAF (at least this is what the dealer told me). Ordered a new one from Dave B and it works fine now.

If the MAF goes - it wont rev up past about 2500. To see what its like if your maf goes - unplug it. Haha.
