Play in the steering wheel

this video is hard to see, but you can tell if you look close enough that there is something seriously wrong.

what do I do now? It just had an alignment recently, like 3 mos. Is it time for serious overhaul? im at 89k miles so I guess it's time for something, just want to know how to tighten it up i guess, or if there is a known problem

well, the front tires were quite low, that helped, but i mean there is like 10-15 degrees of play. Is that normal? does everyone have this? should I go buy a bmw and forget quality handling? I know there is a thread for this somewhere (http://forums.maxima.org/4530329-post3.html). But for christ sake has anyone driven a new german sports sedan just before going back to a maxima and been satisfied?

POST UP, prove me wrong PLEASE!

I want to believe we can have decently priced automobiles with low maintenance costs and rail riding qualitys and a nice smmoth highway ride.

My faith is deteriorating!

are you expecting a huge 4 door sport sedan drives like a lotus elise?
if there is a play, you would be able to find it when the car is off.

the maxima does have some natural play in the wheel but it seems like you have a little too much. You would notice a problem by moving the wheel when the vehicle is off. It's not a bmw and it never will be, but the car drives pretty damn well. I drive my dads a4 occasionally and the steering is very noticeably tighter, but what do you expect. Theres a big difference in price between the two. Moral is dont expenct a $28,000 car to drive like a $50,000. It never will.

You can do 2 tests: move your steering wheel from side to side until you can notice a wheel moving with car stopped and engine off to see how much play it has. It would have some but only from the tire rubber being bent, times less than in the movie.

Jack the front up on 2 jack stands and try to move wheels by hands, while having someone holding the steering wheel for you. There should not be any play. If you notice any you have a problem.

i guess thats good news, heh, i have a lot of replacement parts I just purchased that I wanted to sell, but I guess I have to put them on, including lowering springs

Thanks for the responses though, I will fix and upgrade! The average repair cost for our car is low (though on truedelta.com it has the most trips to the repair shop out of most other cars.) compared to the german cars.
