side vent removal?

Is it possible to remove the side vents? I'm thinking of hiding a small shift light in there. I looked up the FSM but it doesn't show them as a separate piece of the dash board.

I figured that some people must have painted theirs, it's something I am thinking of doing as well. I'll give that a try. It looks like they should come out but I don't want to bust them if they are not removable.

If you can wait till the weekend, I can take a look at the dash I just removed from the backside of the vent.

if that doesn't work you could always use the center vent

I actually don't use the driver's side vent. I find the center vent to be plenty for air circulation. So when I am driving normally I can keep it closed if I don't need the shift light. Open it when I need it.

The side vents are screwed in, 3 screws at bottom 1 on top.
You should be able to get the lower ones, but good luck with the upper screw.
These pics taken with the dash removed from car.
