Top fuel Hemi's had 3 plugs per hole for a while, IIRC. That would make like 24 plugs to change. Just think if you were running Pulseplugs in THAT sucka - changing them would be $24^2.

My $.02: anything beyond factory replacement style platinum plugs is just an abject waste of money in our cars in 99% of all cases. The only time you might need iridiums (or Pulseplugs or whatever other overpriced crap) is if you're really boosting hard or running often on the bottle. And heavy on the "might need" even then. If you're GUARANTEED to save 2MPG just with the plugs, then it still takes 10,000 miles to begin to justify the cost of pulseplugs. I wouldn't bet on them giving you that guarantee.

 

My friend used to have a 98 Taurus SHO and he though because he had 32 valves, he needed 32 spark plugs lol

To expand a bit on what vinco said, Top Fuel and Funny Cars not only have two plugs per cylinder but also two magnetos and full sets of plug wires for everything! They pretty much spark like a welder's torch!

 

And I remember asking him about a 48 valve Ferrari V12 or something like that and he was dumbfounded

Are they overdoing it with the nitromethane? I've seen videos where they added a half a gallon of nitromethane to an old 50 gallon fish tank and it pretty much exploded!

I mean can't you only ignite the gas so quick/efficient to where its overdoing it?

 

Nitro is pretty much liquid dynamite. It is an oxygen-bearing fuel, so the more you can cram into a cylinder, the more power it makes. That's why it's such a big deal when they lose fire in a cylinder. Not only does the engine lose power, but it also stands a good chance of hydrolocking from the fuel. Rods go south, blower goes north, and big fireball ensues. I think they run like 85% nitro and 15% methanol. I fell temporarily in love with a stripper once when she told me she knew that they start up TF motors on alcohol before they turn on the nitro. (That and she was smokin' hot... could've been either one...)

 

So I'm gonna be buying spark plugs soon, and from what I've read in this thread the NGK platinums are the best for the price on a 2001 maxima? Also how much should I be expecting to pay for these?

 

around $7 each (i think), I got the tuneup thingy from pepboys which replaces all my spark plugs with NGK platinum and other services for $85, unless u wanna diy it.

Better check the rear 3 plugs yourself, when you get a chance, to make sure they actually changed those. You might even want to compare them with the front ones. Sparks plugs set alone run around $60 ish. If in addition to that you got other services, and all for $85, I'll be willing to bet they didn't do what they claim they did. Good grief! I bought NGK plugs for about $11 dollars a peice and they work just fine for me. I do agree about the milage thing though.

 

The tuneup was cheaper then fuel system cleaner. Both ran to about $180. BTW, the story is the same just that I posted this after I got the service. On their receipt, it stated how much the items cost and how much labor would be and it stated NGK platnum plugs (6) so im hoping they replaced all 6 since I am pretty much car illiterate anything under the hood.

 

they wont do a tune up without not changing any spark plugs .. or at least they wouldnt admit to it ..

 

lol my dad's 03 SE TE has the original iridiums installed, and he has 119k miles! Shows how long plugs last nowadays.

 

I bought my NGK plugs for $10 something a piece ($60 something for all 6 plugs). When I was removing the old set from the car I found out that the rear ones were not the same as the front ones, and they looked much older too. I bought this car used and I think that it had a tune-up, under the previous ownership, and they only replaced the front ones. I am not so sure about the real effect of having different sets of spark plugs in a car, specially when half of them are new the rest aren't. That's why I was suggesting Kevin319 to check the rear ones to make sure they didn't leave the old ones in there.

 

i went to summit.com and their iridiums plugs were going for $8 or so all together it came to 48 and some change.

does anyone know where they might be cheaper than that.

Somebody at Speed-Dee today told me the labor only is $220.... which freaked me up. I really don't want to do it myself so what's a reasonable cost of 6 double platinum plus labor?
