Speedo Problem

Hello guys, got a problem. About a year ago my car was broken into and my in-dash navi was stolen. When the scumbags ripped it out they destroyed the wiring harness, i brought it to lynnes nissan in Bloomfield NJ and they replaced it but when i got the car back the speedometer and odometer doesn't work. They are telling me that i brought it in like that and its the speedo gear and its my fault and want to charge me $1600 to fix it. I think when they replaced the wiring harness they blew out the speedo sensor and that why it doesn't work. I want to check it and try replacing the sensor but i dont know where i can get a sensor without going threw nissan. Does anyone have one or know where i can get it?

Year of your car might help, as well as 4AT/5MT/6MT.

When did they lift the 15 post requirement for new threads?

Not according to FAST it doesn't.

Anyway, have you tested your current VSS, or have an error code for it? That would be the first thing to do, rather than just replacing it.

i ran the codes and its only throwing one for an 02 sensor...i brought it to a local shop my friend works at and they hooked it up to a computer and i drove the car around the block and it wasnt picking up a speed...he said its eathier the sensor or the gear, but due to the fact that the wiring harness was replaced there is a better chance of the speedo sensor being blown then it being the gear.

When is the VVS?

I'm guessing either, 'what is the VSS' or 'where is the VSS'.

Vehicle Speed Sensor, and on the trans, right above the diff.

It only takes one bolt and one connector to replace it; whether or not you feel the ability to, that's up to you.

The dealer, or check with auto parts stores. They all have online catalogs now, look it up.

Maybe you should diagnose it before thinking about replacing it?

well i brought the car to a shop and they told me its eathier the sensor or the gear but they wanted to drop the trans to get at it and from what i understand from alittle research you can get at it from the drivers side front wheel well...what ill do is take the sensor off and look to see if the gear is still intact or if the teeth have been striped off which is what a nissan dealership told me happened(but they nvr looked at the gear)...if the gear is fine is there any way to check to see if the sensor is anygood?

Yes. By testing it. As I've been saying. EC-501.

EC-501 goes through the diagnostics for the sensor.

P0500 should show up, yes. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean that it will. Would also be a good idea to check continuity all the way up to the cluster itself.

You do have a FSM for your car, don't you? That's what pmohr is referring to, down to section and page number.
