Does your trunk open automatically?
As the topic states, I have generally assumed that when u open the trunk from the key fob or the button on the driver door panel the trunk just pops a little.
I was replacing the starter on a buddies 2001 I30 y'day and noticed his trunk opens almost all the way when you hit either of the buttons.
Is there some mechanism the maxima is missing?

Factory spoiler so mine just opens slightly. When I get my two huge wings to put on top of the spoiler, the trunk probably won't open at all. Wait...did I say two huge wings? I meant three.
The trunks on the cars probably have different supports anyways for the different weights.I switched out the rusty spoiler trunk for a spoilerless one on my third gen and it used to do the same thing Torgus said.Had to put some sound deadening to slow it down some.
What do you mean? When he presses the button on his remote the trunk opens all the way up. The only time he has to touch it is to close it. On the max I got to pop it a walk and open it my trunk lid is deadend but it still never opened up by itself.
Mine is a SE with spoiler and when I press the key fob or the control on the driver's door the trunk opens all the way up; I only touch it to close it. It does not go up too fast, just normal speed I guess. Must be related with the suport and release mechanism. I would try W40 and see if that helps.
Is nice to be able to open it without hands.

weirdest thing happened today, parked the car and locked door(or so i thought). about 2 hours later i go back to the car to see my ****ing trunk wide the **** open.
I'm thinking my **** got broken into, but it seem my trunk either magically opened or I must've press the open trunk button when I locked the car.
Either way all doors were locked, but trunk was open when i go there. It was raining hard here in nyc too, I was lucky the trunk didnt get wet much. And out of shear lucky no1 tried to steal anything.
Has anyone had their trunks open on them by themselves?

I usually disable the trunk opener (IE valet mode, where you have to use a key to open it).
I know it's a PAIN in the ****, but it's more secure. This way if someone breaks into the pass compartment, even if they hit the trunk release, it still won't open. And having the button accidentally pressed in your pocket won't open it either.
Here in the city, I feel a little bit better when I have to put valuables in the trunk.

I bought my '03 GLE used in '05. It turns out the original owner had a dealer installed spoiler added. It used to only unlatch when I hit the button, but I had to lift it by hand. On a hunch, I called the dealer and found out there is a different set of torsion springs for spoiler and non-spoiler cars. I ordered and installed the "SE" (w/spoiler) springs and now mine opens properly.

Put them in yourself?

.

Maybe, I polished my car last November when I got it, since then I wax it every other time I wash so there has to be several layers of Carnauba Moose and Opti-Seal on it.
