tranny cooler

how much of a difference is there between a generic auto tranny cooler and something like a hayden 404?

Get the B&M

I had the Hayden 405 but I think at times it overcooled the tranny and did't keep the fluid at the optimum temperature/viscosity. The B&M automatically does this and I've gotten much better and smoother response from the tranny when I give it a little gas. It also gets the fluid up to operating temperature much quicker. I got the 130-70268 but i'm going to move up to the bigger 130-70264 since it gets very hot here in Texas during the summer (and I won't have to worry about overcooling the tranny during winter with these coolers). Here's a link where you can buy one:

I got better performance from the B&M cooler. It works somewhat like a thermostat and maintains fluid pressure better as well. If you want to stick with Hayden go with the 404. The Hayden 405 is probably too big because even after I got Don's VB mod I think it still overcooled the fluid and/or adversly affected fluid pressure at times. My tranny behaves much better now with the B&M. You definitely don't want the fluid too hot, nor too cold since this will adversely affect tranny response.
