Did the free STS mod... My impressions...

Honestly....The car should have been made like this, there's no point for all that extra distance...It took me about 2 hours cause it's cold outside and I was eating and relaxing and stuff while working, anyway here's the pics...

Also I used a 8mm bolt (the head of the bolt was 14mm) and I used a 9/32 drill bit. I went to a local (cheap) hardware store cause autozone, lowes, home depot, and advanced auto didn't have metric taps which is stupid...
I used an 8-1.0 metric tap
The bolt i used was the caliper bolt which i got from nissan cause it has a smooth surface and then the threads and the smooth surface is the same length as the shifter bushing.

Anyway I marked the hole with a pen through the old bushing and I started to drill and everything went smoothly and then I tapped the hole by just putting the tap over the hole and turning it slowly till it went in and stopped...

Also you don't have to worry much about over drilling the hole cause if you feel the bottom it's a very thick piece of metal and when you feel it, You will understand that it's not coming out of there...

All in all I absolutely love it, I will post up a video tomorrow if people say there waiting for one so you can see the difference in shifting, Anyway i love it and here are some pics...

More info at my cardomain...

Any questions, feel free....

Shorter throws, quicker and easier shifting

I'm guessing an automatic would have no use for this?

Tapping the hole IMO is pointless, it just adds more of a PITA to the whole experience. A bolt and a locknut, and you're good to go.

That's what we did on Merlyn's car, quick and easy.

I kinda agree, drill all the way through and still tapped but looking back on it, I didn't really need to tap. The metal is very hard and it sucked trying to cut those threads.

Bolt and nut method:

I agree the tap is a bit over board but i didn't want to drill all the way through the metal and it's not like it's just a few mm's.... it's a thick hunk of metal and you would need a bolt about an 1" 1/2 to 2" long, It kinda curves from a thin area to a thick area and i tried to center it more or less so it's not too close to that other **** thing to the left, I wanted it to look like part of the car and indeed it does look like a factory job...

The bolt:

It's the 14mm bolt that need's to be removed for a brake pad change...It has a smooth surface and then the threads, The smooth surface is the same width of the bushing that's on the shifter linkage and since it's a brake component....It's strong....
Nissan part number: 44141-4b000 (Pin Bolt)

There are some pics of this on my cardomain page 4

You can just drill and bolt but I prefer the feeling I felt when I was finished... It looks like it should be there and I feel like I accomplished something lol
When I got my car, I always said I would go the extra step..Just look at his pics and look at mine...

How deep did I drill:

I drilled a little under the amount of threads on the bolt...So it was about 1/2" maybe, Just use your best judgment, when you look at the hole and the threads on the bolt you will know when it's right and honestly you can't go wrong cause your threading it to a specific size, the bolt will just catch and screw till tight...

I just did this post cause I felt the original one lacked enough pics and full detail into everything you need and what to do - No pun intended to the original post and all major props given to him...

I will post a video today, just give me a couple hours...

This is a "mod" that I'm going to try as well. I bought 2 8mm bolts from Lowes today, the lithium grease and 8mm tap from O'Reillys and tomorrow I'll get the hand drill.

This is a functional mod that I'm hoping will give me similar results that some of you guys experienced. Thanks for posting the pictures and the facts behind them.

Did you already have the ES bushing? It would have been nice to know how much difference they made.

Did it to my car tonight, totally worth the 20 minutes of effort. I wish I had done it sooner! Feels like it should have been from the factory.
