Anyone tried installing a 5th gen Bose headunit into a 5.5 gen?

I'm interested in the USA-Spec Ipod adapter, but it's not compatible with the '02-'03 since these units don't come with a CD changer input.

So I'd like to install an '00-'01 headunit in my 5.5 gen. Anyone tried this?

It appears the plugs are identical. The '00-'01 just has an extra input for the CD changer.

Assuming simply plugging a 5th gen headunit into my 5.5 gen works like I expect it to, I have a plan for phase 2 as well: My big idea is to actually open up an '00-'01 unit and put the necessary guts in my 5.5 gen Bose chassis so I can maintain my 6cd changer and the cleaner look of the updated 5.5 gen Titanium edition face.

Anyone tried either of these ideas this yet?

EDIT: If you are interested in selling your stock '00-'01 Bose headunit, please PM me.

I think it would work. I've got the usa-spec unit and it works like a dream. I don't have a clue as to whether or not the 5.5 guts would work inside a 5.0 unit. If you have the iPod adapter, why would you still need the 6-cd changer?

I also think the 5th gen headunit looks a lot nicer than the 5.5 one. It is not as easy to use (too many buttons) but looks pretty classy. 5.5 looks pretty plastic(y)

It should work if the plugs are the same.

If a 5th non Bose gen works in a 5.5 please let me know. I'll be in the market for one. I'm sure someone has one on the shelf when they put in a nice aftermarket one.

Thanks

Housecor,

I've referred to your site plenty of times. I have my Bose unit from my 01 AE that is just sitting in storage. Its not something that your going to want to put in the car, and keep there since the screen is scratch, also the CD player doesn't work. But I thought you would be interested it in it since you are planning to open up the 01 Bose HU. Lmk if we can work something out to get this going.

One word of caution, IIRC the 5.5 gen bose has speed sensitive volume control which the 5th gen lacks. I dont know if you would want to lose that functionality.

Good Luck!

p.s. your website rocks!

^^

The plugs might be the same, but there are additional pins/wires in one vs the other.

I have done this swap and can say everything works fine except I lost steering wheel controls, and that was important to me so the old one went back in.

You might also lose trip odometer functionality.

If you are referring to the trip computer (MPG, Temp, etc), you can cut one of the wires from the harness and ground it to the stereo/HVAC chassis. This is what I did, which I found on the org, when I installed my Eclipse and it worked for me.

Correct, the brown/yellow wire. But if someone is just plugging/playing without doing this, then the issue still arises.
