6 sp. 5.5 Gen Maxima

I have currently a 2002 maxima auto and would like to buy 6 sp. 5.5 gen maxima but I heard that they 6 sp. have problems with transmition on 3rd gear, What would you guys say about that and if its worth switching auto on 6 sp?

I can tell you that a new tranny (6 spd with locking diff.) should cost you 1800.00 from the dealer with warranty. I know nothing of a problem with 3rd gear. I just had to replace my tranny its an 03 max cause I had put in a short throw shifter and it basicly screwed up my tranny. So in with the new one. It cost me a total of 2200.00 with labor. Thats all I can add for you.

The swap is definitely worth it. Look for a 6-speed from the '04-'06 maxima as those seem to be less prone to developing issues with the 3rd gear synchro. (yes, it's a very widespread issue, but easily overlooked with the benefit you get from a manual, IMO)

Could you explain what and how your short throw shifter screwed up your tranny?

To the OP, the 3rd gear grind is a somewhat noted / common problem with the earlier 6-speeds. Do some searching on 3rd gear grind/-ing and you'll find some threads about it. I'm one of the lucky ones for now, with no 3rd gear grind, but will be looking into an 04+ tranny for the HLSD and final drive.

And "ain't" should be "isn't"

He probably just means you have more control over your car. Compared to just sitting there and having the car do everything for you.

3rd gear "crunch" is what i think you're reffering too when you talk about the 3rd gear problem? Some have it and some don't. If i was you and your car had low miles i'd sell it and just pick up a 6mt local. However if you insist on doing it yourself i say go for it!
Good luck

The 3rd gear crunch is common in the 02/03 cars. It will grind or crunch when you shift into 3rd really fast at a high RPM.

It's rarely a problem that "needs" to be fixed. It's more of an annoyance.

You can get a low mile 04 to 06 6-speed with LSD for under $1,000. Those have much better syncros and don't get the crunch. If you do buy a car and get the "crunch" it can be handled.

The grind comes in more gears than 3rd... 2nd and 4th can do it also.

I never heard of 2nd and 4th? i'd get that checked. The 3rd gear is common and on behalf of nissan. The 2nd and 4th though seems to be more of the drivers fault? Anyone else had 2nd and 4th?

The only difference though is the 3rd gear "crunch" is regardless of having your foot all the way down on the clutch and shifting slowly or aggresive. It's gonna crunch either or..So like stated its a annoyance but not a "OMG WHAT NOW" problem.

I don't think it matters, you probably just have a good one, if there is such a thing. I bought mine with 21 miles on the clock, literally off the showroom carpet (I was there when they opened the glass doors to get it out) and I have the crunch and it has burned some oil. I've maintained it well for the 7 years I've had it but some things are unavoidable.

If someone makes a bad shift and crunches up the synchros and selector teeth it will always tend to shift poorly. You can try other oils and stuff but the bottom line is the parts that make a shift go smooth are damaged and they will always require a more delicate touch to engage.

u want to buy an 04 6spd. if you can do the swap yourself it's worth it. otherwise for the cash you're better off buying a different max.

The problem happened long before I went turboed. The cause is due to the short thro never really lets your car disengauge correctly and when shifting it is really hard on the sycro. I`m mean the car wouldn`t even go into 6th gear (towards the end). I had a short thro from Stillen, junk hated it very hard to shift. And then about 1 year later the car did not go into 6th gear anymore. Then turboed went in, 6 months later new tranny. Now everything is fine. Thats why I say short thro strewed up my tranny. It was prefect before and shet after.

Every car has it's quirks and the 6 speed Max has the 3rd gear "crunch". Eventually you naturally learn how to minimize it with finesse. I've had it in 2nd and 4th before but I have grinded every gear at some point in every car I've owned, it happens.

For those telling you to warm it up, you've gotta drive it to warm up the tranny so just take it easy starting out on cold morning but that should be the case with any car.

I'm going to say that either the short throw shifter was defective / bad design or something else occured here. The way the STS works is it literally moves the peg closer to the cabin, thus creating less travel for the shifter cable. Less leverage = possibly stiffer shifting feel, but it should not change the engagement of synchros. I'd contribute the 6th gear issue you had to the synchros wearing out / being weak, not because of the STS.
