Maybe a hole in exhaust?

Alright well i was reading a thread about this guy and his exhaust he said was wicked quite and than it started to get throaty deeper sound. It turns out he had a hole. Mine is doing the same thing but i checked for leaks and couldn't find anything. Does anybody else have any ideas about what is causing the sudden change in sound?

I think it's a leak somewhere. While the car is on, cover the hole of the muffler or a towel for a little and see if you hear air escaping. You most likely will.

I tried that i guess i could try again with a towel i used a rag last time. I will do it when my dad is around so he can check for leaks while i plug. Or visa verse

Check the flange between the b-pipe (mid-pipe) and the rear section (muffler). The flange on the muffler typically breaks off and causes a leak. I've had mine go twice.

It's leaking.

Try using a lighter to find the leak. The flame will blow away from the exhaust when you find the leak. You can also use soapy water.

Use a hose up to your ear or a stethoscope with the hose end only it will find any airleak!

Look at the flanges for cracks.

A flange is a metal plate typically welded to the end of a pipe where it meets another pipe (and bolts on).

Looks like this:

Take it to a muffler shop and they should be able to weld it back on. If they can't, you may need a new muffler.

For $11 I fixed that exact problem

Tools needed: Ratchet set, some sort of saw, jack stands, strong arms, patience.

I dont recall what the size of the oem pipe is but measure it and go to advance auto or something and just buy a ~4in long connector pipe, some muffler sealant, and some clamps.

You'll have to get your back end a good foot off the ground before you can snake the muffler out. (it made cutting that part of the flange off easier IMO but all I had was a hacksaw) I just cut the flange pieces off and replaced it with the connector piece and used more than enough sealant to make sure it didnt leak. Its a PITA to saw through but its better than paying ~$100 to have it repaired.. just be super careful around your brake lines and make sure the clamps are tight enough so it doesnt fall off. You may also want to undo the B pipe brackets that are close to the cat to make it easier to move around.

I'm planning on getting my exhaust replaced soon so this shouldnt be a permanent fix.

Check to be sure it's not the crush seal at that flange that needs to be replaced! If the flange is the culprit cause it's cracked yeah go visit your local muffler shop it should cost you less the $20 to fix this!

Fix your broken weld, cut out the crushed B-pipe sections and replace with straight pipe, and replace your Oem cat with a WSP cat and call it the day, unless you want headers! That stock exhaust is exhaust is actually well designed and Catback are slightly louder and maybe a power increase of 5-8 Whp for about $500-$700! Go the cheap route it will increase your throttle response!

I think I have the problem mentioned in this thread, except it seems I have a hole in my pipe (red dot in below picture). That area is pretty rusted through but the pipe still looks in "ok" condition. Took it to a muffler shop and he wanted to charge me $120 to basically conjoin both pipes with a straight pipe.

What is the proper, economical, fix when you have a hole on the muffler-side of the connection and the whole connection (flange I think it was referred to as) is pretty rusted?

Car runs like crap and I hear a very annoying drone. Anyone know what caused this? Rust probably contributed a lot but it kinda looks like a burn hole since it's black around the area.

Bump on if it's okay to replace the flange-connection by the axle with a straight pipe.

It's ok to do it if you don't mind losing the bolted type connection. Changing the muffler will be a little more difficult as it will require welding. As for the black stuff around the hole, it it most likely from the exhaust gas blowing out the hole.

As for the $120 price tag to weld the pipe, was the muffler guy wearing a mask and holding a gun? That price is absolutely outrageous!

Cool, thanks for the assurance. No plans of changing muffler unless something's wrong with it, and it appears to be in okay condition as my exhaust was pretty silent before noticing the hole.

It's funny too 'cause I talked him down to $60. So you quote me $120 and I'm able to talk you down to half that, yeah, no thanks!
