Need suspension advice

Kind of long but here goes...

2001 SE...My front passenger side strut is bent and one of my rears (also my passenger side I believe) is blown so I'm going to need to change everything. Got an estimate from Sears Auto (had no intention of having them repair anything, just wanted to see what I was up against) and it came up to $741.59 just for the FRONTS ($166 per strut, $91 for a tie rod end, $80 for labor, $120 tie rod installation, and $70 for alignment). I definitely don't want to go this route because besides the fact that the price seems high to me for just the fronts they use Monroes which I've read many bad reviews from people on here. I also figure this would be a good time to get rid of that floaty feeling the stock suspension gives me so...I have a few questions.

I'm looking for something that'll provide more stability and faster reactions for spirited driving yet isn't so stiff that it'll bother passengers. I've been researching different setups and I'm stuck. Many people rave about coilovers. If I were to go this route it seems that I would be looking at Nex GTs, Tein SS, or BC Racing coilovers. I do understand that coilovers arent' a slap on and forget about type of mod that require regular maintenance. My question is how often does this have to be done and how involved is the maintenance. I'm still pretty noobish when it comes to this car, and I don't have all of the tools necessary but I'm willing to learn.

Would Tokico Illuminas, springs (not sure if I should keep stock or go with something else), FSTB & RSB give the same handling?

Note: I'm running on stock 16s right now and do plan on getting 18s and lowering to eliminate the wheel gap in the future but that isn't set in stone.

Thanks for the help...

coilovers arent that bad at all... just do your research on which one suits you best... if you are going for something comfortable then i dont think coilovers in general would be a great choice, unless you climb the $$$ tree... anyhow, like you said if ur looking for something more responsive and sporty then definately... im also thinking of which coilover brand i want to go with also... the tein SS are out the question for me though, not low enough lol

if I do go the coilover route I think I would go with BC Racing ones because they get great reviews by people around my area so I'd assume they can withstand the harsh road conditions around here. How often do coilovers in general have to be maintained though? Every other month? Once/twice a year? I just want to know what I'd be getting myself involved with.

At the very least you should check them every 6 months to make sure they're tight. You can also adjust dampening and height whenever you feel fit, if at all.
