Problems with accleration HELP!!

Ok so heres the story i work at a toyota dealership, my 00 maxima one day just wouldnt respond to any sort of gas i give it. from a dead stop punching it it takes two times longer to get up to about 60 on the high way ill cruise around 70 mph and punch it and the rpms will go right to 4300 and wont go much faster then 80 but i can feel the car wanting to go faster but it cant, it almost feels like its bogging down at stop lights and such. today actually i went from a dead stop and was driving normaly and when i gave the car gas the rpms dropped to literally 0 then popped back up to 2400 rpms. I dont know if i have a serious problem or not.I brought it to the shop at work and they said it was the catalytic converter and Y Pipe. They wanted to charge me 2500 bucks just to get that fixed. I went to a friend who works at a shop and he said my serpentien belt needs to be replaced so i did that and im still in the same spot.
I also asked him to look at my CV joints because when i turn right i hear a clicking noice. Yet he said they were fine so im stuck with those two extremely annoying problems that i want to have fixed tommarow im going to change the oil and oil filter as well as the air filter to see if it does anything any kind of sujestions or hints to what you might think it would be would be great.

Did they tell you why it was the catalytic convertor? Is it clogged? .. working at a toyota dealership, they must specialize in toyotas.. not nissans .

Take it to a nissan dealership, have it checked out. When is the last time you changed / cleaned your MAF?

Changing the air filter on your car should help with the acceleration, after the oil change. O and BTW, 2500 for a Y pipe and CC is murder.

Keep us posted.. Hope its not something serious..

My vote is the MAF sensor, common problem....and I'm not just saying that because I'm selling one in the classified section (see my sig)

But no really, replace your MAF sensor. It takes a whole 5 mins

I also vote for MAF.

Also, please start using punctuation in your posts and STOP posting HELP!!!! in every one of your threads. Most threads are also people asking for help so differentiating your thread from others doesn't help or speed up the advice that you receive.

Definitely sounds like a MAF problem. I would try cleaning it first then if that does not fix it then I would replace it. Also, is your "service engine soon" light on?

I had A problem like that and it turned out to be watered down gas, just buy some gastank water remover at autozone (2 bottles) and see if that helps, should be about $3 dollars each, and dont fill up where you did last time go somewhere else. Problem went away after for me.... I also had A mechanic tell me it was the converter too but another mechanic (2ND OPINION) told me it was water in the gas tank not the converter so luckily it cost 6 bucks to fix the problem and some good gas (91 octane or more)!!!!

does your car slow down quicker than usual when coasting? maybe you have a brake that is dragging. I think it sounds like a maf problem though.

If you do end up needing to replace your y pipe a cheaper option would be an aftermarket cattman or warpspeed one. I am selling my cali spec warpspeed y that has about 8k on it, i dont know what a used y pipe is worth but i'm sure we could work something out thats fair.

Well when I talked to the people down at the Toyota dealership they said that it the CAT was clogged and the Y-pipe was rusted. They said its making my exhaust louder( I asked them if they saw the after market cat back on there and they had no idea what i was talking about).

I do not think that it is the brake dragging because it stops the way it normally does. If it were the MAF how much are they usually and whats a quick way to clean them? No lights are on in the car like the check engine light or anything that's the only reason i don't think that its a major problem. I don't have a lot of time to look things up I have my last and worst Final tomorrow. I looked at mannetti21's MAF that he has for sale and mine looks nothing like that. I think over the weekend ill shoot a video of the car to see what you guys think.

P.S I'm Sorry about posting HELP!! on all of my threads

the cheapest way to pick up a new maf would be DaveB you can contact him here (http://forums.maxima.org/members/daveb.html) or maybe someone else can come up with his number

but first i would try cleaning the maf which is outlined here:

If you only have 58k, your catalytic converter should be covered under the 8yr/80k emissions warranty. Take it to nissan and have them check it out if the MAF isn't the culprit.

A clogged cat could would match the symptoms. It could be the MAF, but I only think it might be part of the problem. However it couldn't hurt to clean it to start off. Any smell of rotten eggs or black smoke out the back?

thats funny

i have the opposite problem that you have with your car. the only thing that my problem is much worst. when i start my car in the morning and step on the gas the car will start to stall and if i tray to go faster it will get stuck in the 3000rpm for a couple sec.. and then it will go to the 5000 and 6000 once it gets there it doesn't change gears until i let go of the gas, if i don't let go of the gas it will stay on first gear for a long time. once it passes first gear it starts to run a little better it gets all the other gears good but it takes a log time to get to 100 when before i used to get to 140 with no problem that's when my maxima was at its prim lol

Did you buy an aftermarket MAF adapter or was it OEM through the store you bought it from?

What i did was i got an aftermarket MAF adapter and new MAF so that i can make a custom shorty intake I still have another problem with the car while I'm turning right I hear a clicking noise but when I am driving along at about 35-40 it turns into a scrapping noise. I had my friend look at it and he said that the CV joint (BOOT) looks fine so maybe its underneath the ruber boot.

If it ends up being your axle, get it from NOWHERE except www.raxles.com, regardless of your auto parts hookup. Their quality is unsurpassed. This is something worth spending the money on.

if you car is clicking when you torn 100% of the time its you axles. and for the scraping it could be your wheel Bering or its your break sensor that pis of metal that the brake pads have to let you know that you need new brakes. hey soxruled0 how many mails douse your car have? the reason I'm asking its because i have dos problems too and i have 150000 on my baby

My car has 58945 miles on it. It was my grandparents car before mine, all i do is drive it from my house to school which is maybe half mile away. The interior still looks mint, ill have pictures of the car up soon. If i ordered those axles how hard would it be to install them

its not that hard to change your axels if you have power tools. but if you don't you are going to have to put a little muscle to it.

Here's a Maxima specific how-to site. It even has a perfect how-to for axle replacement on your car.

I just don't understand how my car has such few miles and has so many problems. I've been tempted to buy a new car, but I just love the maxima when it runs well.
