Air Conditioning Problem

Anyone remember me? I sort of quit this forum five years ago for personal reasons while I had my 2000 GLE.

I’m now driving a 2008 Infiniti G37 coupe, but my post here is really about my son’s own 2000 GLE. It seems his A/C fan stopped working a few months ago and his afraid the cost of repair may be more than he can afford. But yesterday, it came back out of the blue, but when he shut down it was not there again upon restart. He does get some cooling while the car is moving (that’s why I think it’s a fan problem).

Can anyone suggest what may be going on so he won’t have to fear a $1,000+ repair bill at the dealer?

I'd check the blower motor resistor first.

They are usually a culprit.

After that it might be the motor itself. You can pick one up on EBay for about $50-$60.

Both are really easy to do it yourself.

Thanks, we’ll check that. But what’s involved in doing it ourselves? I was assuming the motor is under the dash somewhere and getting to it may be a real problem.

Very easy.

Remove the glovebox (being careful not to mess with the airbag wires). the resistor is right there held in the airbox by 2 screws. The motor is also in plain site.

Sounds great. We'll try that.

I guess we have another question. After accessing the resistor and motor how can we tell if they’re bad?
