engine starts then dies
i just had the engine replaced in my 02 max and all went well and when i got it back the car started fine with no issues. After getting gas later that day i went to start the car and it started but then died. So i started the car again and it died again. So i started it a 3rd time and gave it some gas and the car stayed running. Its doing this every time i start the car now. I just have to give it gas and it'll stay running and runs great. Any one had this issue? The engine has 60k miles on it by the way. Wonder if its the injectors or maybe a vacume line issue.

Man, I have an 00 with the 3.0 and mine has been doing this same thing for at least the last year. I've been so busy with my other car build that I havn't had a chance to diagnose the problem. I really need an answer on this as well, it seems to be getting even worse now.

my car only dies when i start it after its warm , but if i give it gas as soon as its started it stays running and runs fine, no stalls or idle jumping. i am not sure how my MAF is, when i had the old motor in i didnt have this problem and i am using the same maf

I replaced my MAF a year or 2 ago. Works fine. My issues are the same as wish2345, will drive fine and never stalls, just immediately dies when you start the car unless you give it some gas.

Part of the throttle body. A dirty throttle body will cause the engine to stall on restart. I was having that same issue (although usually the rpms would fall to around 300 but not always stall). Cleaned the throttle body, problem solved.
There are specific instructions on how to clean the 5.5 DBW throttle body so either follow them or pay your mechanic $40 or so to clean it.

My '95 Max (150K miles) acted the same way. It was a dead spot on the ignition switch contacts that create the "Start" signal when you turn the key. I tried to explain it in my 4th gen post, "Failure to Launch (Hard Starts)...FIXED!". I also summarized a lot of other suggested fixes for this problem. Some of it might apply to the '02 5th gen Max'es. Best of luck with it.

after looking and listening i may have a vacuum leak that sounds like its comming from the back of the intake manifold but cant find anything. its still a big toss up on what the issue is. I would try to clean the throttle body but having a hard time finding good step by step instructions. Also trying to find the steps to reset the idle

Wish2345,
Did you ever find a solution to your problem? I am having similar issues.
My car starts when cold and idles to 1000 rpm. After about 45 seconds it smoothly dies. I recently replaced my starter so maybe I bumped into somthing down there. I also hear a faint hissing noise but it's loudest right over the intake manifold, so that might be the normal sound in there.
Another thread on the link below says it was the O2 sensor.
