What do you think about this deal?
Hello,
I am planning on buying a 02 Nissan Maxima SE. It has 66,000 miles and is gun metal with black cloth interior. It seems like it is a base model SE. I don't see any other options except the drivers seat is power.
The car is clean but has scratches throughout the car. I think there might have been some minor accidents with the passenger front fender and rear bumper but will check carfax to verify. The exterior is clean for its age.
The car ran well with no mechanical problems. The only mechanical problem I found was a transmission leak near the torque converter and the car has been having some issues with the egr valve CEL coming on. The owner took the car to the dealer, and they have not been able to reproduce the problem. From the work order, the problem has been the gas tank cap has not been fully closed. I think there is something wrong with the EGR valve.
This car was owner by only one owner, and he wants $7300 for the car. I dropped the price down from $7700 complaining about the age of the car and the tires that will soon need to be replaced. Do you guys think this is a good deal? What other things should I look at before I purchase the car?

Oh ok, i saw a SE today (he said it was a GLE but on the back it said SE) and it had the cloth interior but it didnt that have that control panel i like, ya know the one whee the AC has the turning **** isnt of the slider.
So if it isnt leather it definately isnt a GLE correct?
As far as the car goes, 7300 is a bit much for what is wrong with it. id say use edmunds.com to get a good estimate, KBB is overrated, doesnt estimate correctly and overall generally ****ty to use

That sounds a bit high to ask when there are obvious problems with it. IMO there is surely a better deal to be found, but it is your decision. If you really want the car, I would offer 6500 cash in hand. You would be surprised what people can be talked down to.

KEEP LOOKING!!!!!
There are ALOT of people hurting right now & giving there cars away just to get out of the payments! If you got $7-8K you can rob people without a gun for there cars right now!!

I say look elsewhere, too much money, no leather, no sunroof. If the car only has 66k, it should be in great condition, but as you described, many scratches, fender, rear bumper, trans leaking, cel problem, and a set of tires, not to mention items you haven't seen. Take it to a shop to see what it would cost to have everything fixed, mechanical and body, then deduct that from $8500, then offer that price if you still want the car.
Why purchase a vehicle for $7k if you need to lay out a ton of money after the purchase the car?

Where are you located. These cars seem to vary in price quite a bit by area.
In the Northeast the price is probably not so bad if the car was really clean. With all the small isues you are talking about it seems a bit high.
But that is great mileage for an 02. I'm assuming that it is a Auto. If it's a 6 SP then it is worth a bit more because they are so much harder to find.

Some people really need to get a better idea of pricing their car. SOme guy is selling a 01 SE, stock everything, no leather for $7000. He had the nerve to tell me to use KBB ( which right there is laughable) and he said its going for around 9,000 on a 90k mile car.
LOL, i understand people are trying to get money but be reasonable and atleast realistic in your pricing

Seems to be a little high for all of those problems. You should be able to get it much lower than that. I think the dealer trade-in is only running around $4500-5500.
I'm seeing 04's for $5500. I'm sure it's some sort of scam - seems a little low for only 40k miles!

I got a carfax, and it seems like the car is a single owner, no accident vehicle. The thing that made me suspicious about the vehicle having an accident was that the gaps between the fender and the hood was slightly different on both sides of the car. But the paint looked original. I talked to the owner today, and he dropped the price another $100. I am going to pick up the car tomorrow and deal with the problem with the EGR valve once they start back up. For the miles and the age of the car, it is in fair condition. Thanks for you comments and suggestions, but I can't seem to find any descent cars around Los Angeles.
