Brake Pad Replace & Cost

Hi Forum:
I have a question. I took my SE into the dealer today to have an oil change. I knew my brake pads needed replace--they were at 5-10%. I decided to just have them replace them. My question is: First, should I expect that much wear at only 24k miles (I drive hardcore), and second, should the cost be around $600 for all four discs being machined and pads replaced?

Thanks

why do you need all 4 brakes replaced and cut? i got 49,500 and i just did ft brakes and didnt have to cut rotors, take them someplace else i bet you all you need to do is replace ft brakes

$600 is WAY too much. That can get you new aftermarket rotors, pads, stainless steel braided brake lines, and high performance brake fluid.

They're trying to rob you silly.

ouch. they should include Vaseline for that much. Like Kev said, you can purchase a full aftermarket brake kit for that amount. Let me know if you need one..

The full kit for $600? What all does this include? I might be very interested...

I Got them done- for cheaper

I luckily listened to your advice. I actually decided to do some due diligence and call some other dealers. Apparently it costs around 450 for all the brake pads replaced, machined, etc. the majority of the costs are attributed to labor- 300-400. I should not have gone to the dealer, but oh well. I authorized the work before I got an estimate- bonehead mistake. anyhow thanks for looking out for a dumbass like me. I complained to the dealer I took it to and they did make the price more reasonable. It is my first new car, and I don't have much experience with auto shops, so I guess I am a little misinformed and niave... I have learned though. Thanks

Due diligence? You think you still got a deal at $450 for all 4 wheels? Ouch.

A brake job for all 4 wheels to just replace the pads and machine the rotors should be around $150.

Advice: Dealers will be the most expensive places to get routine service done, such as brake jobs, oil changes, tire rotation, etc. Be weary and check around!

Chod,

It pays to do your own work. Brake pads for your Maxima run about $50 for the front and $40 fro the rear through various online Nissan dealers. I seriously doubt your rotors need resurfacing. I don't recommend this procedure because Japanese cars have VERY thin rotors and often a careless technician will remove too much material. When this happens, the rotors will warp. I still do not understand why you need new pads at just 24k? Brake pads last anywhere from 50k-100k, especially rears. My advise is if you continue to goto the dealer, be very carefully about what they do and verify their recommendations on this forum or elsewhere before you authorize any work.

rear brake pads are organic and seem to not last as long. Fronts are semi-metallic....

I forgot to mention. I live on a gigantic hill in frisco. and the city is stop and go and mad hilly. my car is used primarily for city driving - most of our automobiles require brake work more periodically than those in the midwest, etc, where you have praries and saltflats to drive on.
