Struts Shocks springs Installation Price?

Whats up people. i recently got 4 struts shocks and springs that all ready assemblemed for my 2003 Maxima. They are a complete OEM setup. Around how much would it be to get installed? I got a price qoute for 285 is that a fair price? I was expecting something more like 180. Anyone? Thanks

What exactly does "all ready assemblemed" mean? Are the springs and mounts already installed on the struts? If so, I think its just a matter of loosening some nuts and switching them out.

But if they arent already installed on the shocks, then its a bit more involved. I think I've had new shocks (4 of them) installed for around $200.

Accurate, yes, but not helpful. I hope that philosophy doesn't extend to doing your own dentistry.

OP, try asking djfrestyl for a ball-park estimate. Figure anywhere from 2 to 4 hours at a fair hourly rate, like $75/hr. Looked at that way, $285 is a reasonable price, although you might find better if you look for another shop.

And yeah, "already assembled" doesn't make any sense.

Assuming already assembled means the springs, mounts, & boots are already installed on the shock/strut, it takes like maybe 10 minutes per wheel after you've jacked up the car & taken the wheels off. It just takes removing 3 14mm nuts at the top, and 2 17mm bolts with 19mm nuts at the bottom for removal (for struts). Your rear shocks are just 2 14mm nuts at the top and a 17mm bolt at the bottom.

If you were willing to pay 180, the cost of tools to do it yourself will not even amount to half that and is stuff you get to keep (assuming you already have jack & stands). Deep 19mm socket, 17mm socket, breaker bar, maybe a 1/2" drive to 3/8" adapter, 14mm socket, 6" extension & u-joint, and a ratchet....maybe some PB Blaster.

But if you're determined to go to a shop, just make sure you've expressed to them that they're already assembled and there's no need to compress/uncompress springs. Find out their labor rate & divide their estimate by it. If they charge you for more than 1.5 hours I'd look elsewhere. Some shops might strictly stick to book time. Definitely do not spend no $285 to install some pre-assembled struts/shocks!

If spring compression is the suckiest part, the next suckiest would be those bottom bolts if you have to deal with snow & salt (PB Blaster & breaker bar to the rescue). The next suckiest part is just the rear shocks...getting to that nut behind the shield (6" extension & u-joint to the rescue).

Just remember to raise both wheels on an axle...e.g., both the front wheels raised when working on fronts, both rear wheels raised when working on rears.

I didn't know they could ship like that. Neat.

But that begs the question: if your new parts are OEM, why are you replacing the springs?

Djfrestyl is a good guy, just went to him for motor mounts which was installed fairly quickly.

Anyway shoot me a PM if it pre assembled. If I dont have to pull out my spring compressors, it shouldnt be bad at all.

Edit. BTW im in Queens

Last time I checked at Pep Boys the fronts were a flat $60 each. They were running a 1/2 price special on the labor a couple of weeks ago, but I think that ended this past weekend. Didn't check on the prices for rear, and don't know if that price changes if you bring in your own parts.

Their hourly charge is $95 for other stuff.

SO am i understanding this correctly? Everything is already assembled it's just a matter ofthe 17mm bolts the 14 top bolts, or w.e the lower bolts were (I believe 19mm or 21)... Thats literally 5 minutes per springs and someone is offering $200.00 to do it...... Holy Shnit i'd fly out there myself and do it for that price... That's if I'm understanding this correctly..

As stated above if you were to pay $200.00 for either someone to just bolt them on or compress etc yada yada for springs... Why not invest in a tool set that can save you major buck down the road? Alot of the write ups are pretty clean and detailed. The only thing people lack is confidence which is what leads to something messing up. However when it comes to something as seirous as making sure your car stays up and you don't kill yourself because you did something impropperly I'd def reccomend getting someone who you KNOW knows what they're doing to do it for you. But try to watch as they do and learn from it. Soon enough you'll have the confidence and save yourself tons in labor down the road.
Good luck.

Here in Ontario installation can run from 60.00 - 100.00 per corner at most shop rates ... I found a small shop that did mine for 150.00 total removed my OEM and swapped parts and installed my new struts and springs ... don't forget the front end alignment will be required after the install for another roughly 90.00

Agree 100% x 10,000,000,000

I've made a deal with the OP to help him with the install - I'll be teaching him as we do the job this weekend.

That's seriously decent of you. Most mechanics charge extra when the customer wants to help, or just say "no" right up front.

Most mechanics are concerned about liability (safety of the customer), or might also be concerned that the customer might get in their way while the work is being done.

To me, it's all the same

You don't gotta be a mechanic to know how to work on your car
