I am thinking of buying a 2002 SE

I found a 2002 SE, cloth seats, lights, cruise, windows, and a/c all work. The tires will need to be replaced within the next 4 months. It has 174k miles. Clean body, interior and engine bay. Paint still glossy with only one visible door ding. It does have the oil gasket leak problem though. The condition of the car is pretty good. Tags are good and the title is clean.

I would like to know what everyone thinks it is worth?
Here is a pic of the vehicle.

Looks nice. Personally I wouldn't buy it, to many miles. Nothing really wrong now, but down the (short) road somethings going to happen.
I wouldn't spend anything over $5000(canadian dollars) including taxes. Now for couple grand more you can get one with a lot less mileage and look great.

I personally would be cautious buying a car with that much mileage, but then again if you can grab the car for a really good price I could definitely be persuaded. Is it a 6spd, or auto? The oil gasket leak seems kinda sketchy to me, probably burning oil like many other vq35 engines. I would say more than 3.5-4k.

almost everybody's 5.5 is over 100K miles, if you dont want it, you can buy it and trade for my 13sec automagic at 147K ... im sure when somebody buys a car for significantly less they are sure sooner or later little maintanance stuff will pop up, even changing motor in these cars are nothing nowadays, and there are plenty on here with well over 200K... i'd buy it... if you like it, get it... the same car that has 90K can have the same problem...
Typical max problem
MAF, o2 sensors, Oil burn, 3rd gear grind, valve cover, ect... nothing a lower mileage maxima would be less suseptable to...

Depends on what you are paying & if you are planning to keep it for the rest of its life. I personally wouldnt pay more than 4500 - 4800. However, if you can afford a couple of thousand dollars more, you could get something around 90k and that would also get you a good resale value. Good Luck.

Do you have a trustworthy machanic? Have him check it out first and maybe it won't cost much to keep it rolling.

FWIW I bought my 02 Se 6SP MT with 91K miles on it for $6500 last December.

In the Philly area at the time that was a killer deal. He dropped $1000 from his asking price because I was ex Air Force.

At the time most cars with about 100K were going for about $7800.

But I really think it matters the region for the cost of the cars. Even then it seemed to cvary up tot $1000 depending on where you lived.

Hope this helps.

Get it inspected for sure. Whats the asking price? 02 SE is a nice car for sure. What do you mean oil seal? are you talking about the oil pan? If its the oil pan thats an easy 45 min job you can do yourself and the part is only $100

Maybe it was ugly because of the body kit.

+1... I would offer less than $4000.

OP, you suppose to post this in sticky #2. http://forums.maxima.org/5th-generat...info-here.html

I would rather pay few thousand more to get a lower mileage max. Good luck.

164,000 on mine. Still seems to run pretty good. Wouldn't pay more than $4000-4500 for 10k more miles and it would have to be checked out thoroughly before I bought it. I'd set aside $1500 or so on top of the purchase price to take care of anything that needs repair.

My son bought a '97 Accord with 214,000 miles on it. He's put nearly 20,000 miles on it and the only things he's replaced is the radiator and the muffler (they salt the road where he lives in northern Kentucky). Generally, you can get 200,000+ miles out of a well maintained car before you need major repairs like an engine or transmission.

no more than $4K for a car with that many miles. + the leaky gasket that youre gonna have to fix, and tires that are almost dead? im sure the car runs great but it needs too much work to spend more than 4 on.

on the bright side, it does look very well maintained, cosmetically, and i love the color.

I understand the lowballing... if you buy a stock 6spd for 4500, i would literally sell my auto with mods for the same, just to buy a 6spd... i understand the high mileage, but like somebody stated, it depends on the state, i'd get it for 5K no more

I appreciate everyone's input. I will do one more thorough check on it then make a decision. btw it has an automatic transmission. I use to have a 2002 6sd which explains my user name but sold it since my wife could not drive standard and her vehicle kept breaking down.

I have owned 3 maximas, 1986 with the digital dash and sold it when it had 143k, a 1989 5spd and sold it at 120k and finally the 02 with 98k. I was very happy with all three of them.

I guess the worse of my troubles would be the valve covers gaskets leaking and the oil burning and me having to put oil in it every 1k...(that is how the 6sd was for me)

I will make a decision this weekend.

thanks................

Okay everyone I picked it up today for $3,500. Overall it really is not a bad deal for the price..One of the nice things about the car is that the A/C is "IcE-cOLd" ready for the next TEXAS heat wave. As I mentioned before the valve covers gaskets will need to be replaced soon and also the tires. The paint and interior look good. Xenon lights are bright and windows roll up and down without a problem. It is a 2-owner clean title car.

I did shop around and it seems the 2000-2001 models with around 161k are running about the same price so I just had to get this one instead since I like the rear and front light and the 3.5L. Ma'an this vehicle is quick.....

thanks everyone for your input.....

Nice pick up for the price. Engines and transmissions aren't too expensive should you need/want to replace either.

Mods? funny you ask. I was just eye-balling a set of leather seats from an 04 but do not know if they will fit my 02. Plus I only have a power driver seat and not passenger and these seats are probably both power front and passenger.

35 seems like a great deal, regardless of total miles on the car. If the body is good, and the interior is good, and the rust is nil or reasonable... everything else can be replaced or repaired as needed.

So what's going on? You just sold an '02 half a year ago. Overcome with regret? Couldn't find or afford the Titan you wanted to buy?

Hey Roch, I went with an F150 over the Titan overall I felt the ford was a better truck. I sold the 6spd because the wife's car kept breaking down and she couldn't drive standard; plus the family and I just wanted a truck again.

This car is for my son and he can't believe it. He really likes the color and it has warmed up to me also. Overall the condition is good but it still needs to be what we call in my house "daddy clean". I had been searching for months for a max for him and had not come across a better deal than this, especially for an 2002. He plans on sticking to the stock wheels and maybe upgrade the stereo system for Christmas.

Wow, what a nice Dad! When I was a kid, I had to beg my father just to borrow his crappy Ford Pinto.

Your boy sure is lucky that his dad is smart with cars. I'm envious of the bonding you two will do over that SE. Well done.
