rasp RAsp RASSPP!!!!

Just installed headers and i'm running straight pipes and the rasp... Well... I'd like to shoot myself. How can I clean up the sound back to a deap growl? High flow cat? Anyone got a link to one they know WORKS and not some ebay crap labeled as a hfc but actually just a test pipe? I got a previous ebay one and it's no hfc... It's just a pos test pipe but it was cheap and it came with the car so eh...

Anyone got the link for one I can order? I want the sound gone ASAP!

Thanks

Well...you answered your own question.

'straight pipes' = rasp. Either get an HFC or resonated test pipe and either a Cattman cat-back or a Magnaflow 22" resonator.

Well I'm sorry to tell you that you'll never get much of a growl back. If you installed almost any of the headers available for our cars, you have an equal length Y-pipe. It makes for a high pitched, almost crotch-rocket like exhaust note that most import enthusiasts would kill for.

To get rid of rasp, a resonator is the way to do it. A cat can help, but moreso in the volume department. You'll also cease to shoot flames if you reinstall a cat!

You want to fit the resonator as close to your Y-pipe as you can, as the further it is from the exit, the better it will sound. Optimally you'd put a 22" resonator right after the test pipe (or in place of the test pipe).

I'd also recommend a muffler, preferably magnaflow or another straight-through steel-pack design. It will bring the pitch of your exhaust note down a good deal as well as the volume.

Deja vu, Sparks.

Thanks, I thought it was an upgrade for sure. I agree with you I love the deep tone, but you'll never get that V8 note, so I just go for a nice V6 sound.

Yeahhh, obx v1, Don't ask I got them for a steal. un-equal length y. Fitment around front motor mount was about all the problems I ran into... My car had rust on the nuts so a simple 8 hour job took me over 20 hours in 2 days... OMFG... Rust+ uninstal= MORE PITA THAN NORMAL HEADERS INSTALLED! Anyways.... that's done with and my hands are definitely feeling the pain.

Rochester I also am in Love with the muscle sound and am hopping to get into a good ole ta ls1 or lt1 in the next upcoming years when I got time and money to dump into one haha..

The rest of my exhaust is a test pipe that the previous owner had a a deleted res. That leads out to the end. No muffler.

Mist max, The instal is a serious PITA... Just so you know. Breaker bar makes it ALOT easier...

Rhyno yep, I started the instal day after I got them lol. Liking the power.

Btw rochester thanks for the edit on the sig lol.

Looks like a magnaflow res is the way i'm gonna go about.

Anyone got the link? I'm in and out right now and not too free to search,(as ssad as that sounds)..

Resonator and a turbo muffler would work well.

I can't remember what it was that completely blocks them off so they;re not functional... o2 something...

Anyways yeah. I need a res! hahaha

Make sure you're test pipe is the EXACT length as well. My stupid test pipe was .25" off, pushing my cat-back far enough to hit up against the heatshield against my gas tank. Sounds MUCH better with zero rasp when I threw the cat back on.

Sparks, you weren't experiencing any rasp with a 22" resonator and magnaflow muffler with no cat?

I know that when I got my OBX headers put on, I had a test pipe, 14" magnaflow, and a flowmaster muffler and it sounded horrible. I put on a Magnaflow HFC and it sounds really good now. I am planning to go 3" at some point and would like to go without the cat, but I don't want rasp at all. Hopefully sparks has the answer

14" resonator just won't cut it with headers and test pipe. I never said I had a 22" resonator or magnaflow muffler, I am recommending them because one 22" resonator should be plenty to remove rasp. Then magnaflow makes a long-lasting stainless-steel packed muffler (as opposed to a cheap glass-pack) that will always sound good, instead of gradually burning the glass out while still giving a nice, deep sound without a chambered design.

Although I did have a 22" resonator and magnaflow muffler on my N/A full bolton cammed Spec V, and it sounded great for a 4 banger with no rasp.

My open exhaust dump had ZERO rasp with 2 14" resonators. Here's a pic of it...

I installed mine in the garage with jackstands in the front. The most difficult part (as he said) was rusty bolts, but with the right tools that isn't so bad. I didn't have the right tools, so I soaked them in PB blaster for a few hours.

got a glass pack for 20 bucks. WOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.

And I dramatically extend my woww even more* best 20 bucks I ever spent in my life. I was expecting it to quiet it down a lil but when I started my car holy cow. NO DRONE, Perfect back pressure and Pulls are sooooo much smoother and stronger. Before with straight pipes as crazy as it sounds I felt like I lost power. car pulled rough and shakey. 60 total for weld right after test pipe and the difference is night and day. I actually feeel power now from headers and car runs as well as it ever has. Who ever thought advanced auto and their $20.00 glasspack would actually make me happy... Love the sound, and now i'm not ashamed to hit it if I need too haha.. Idk how many of you have ran headers with straight pipes.. But if you have you know how raspy, loud as SHI#, and annoying it is at merely 2k...

So happy that's done with. I actually don't hate my car anymore ( I did from yesterday till this morning till I got this welded on hahaha)

Well from my picture you obviously know I have.

I had a autozone "cherrybomb" glasspack on mine for a long time before i went with the 2 14" resonators. It started getting louder and louder with the cherrybomb, so I had to swap it out eventually. But I was spraying nitrous through it. It got louder after every bottle, haha.

There is seriously NOTHING wrong with a cherry bomb resonator. It's just a cheap glass pack that does the job... until all the glass burns out

Not trying to hijack this thread but I am having the same issues...

OBX V2 (equal length Y pipe)
Megan Test Pipe (small, resonated)
OBX SS Muffler (Strait through)

Tons of rasp at 2-3k rpm

Length of resonator I should get? Not looking to get a High Flow cat...
Glass Pack? Thrush/CherryBomb? I have a friend who can get me 30% off at autozone, so if I can buy something there that would be great .. OBX Resonator?

The thing about glasspacks like the thrust/cherrybomb is you'll have to replace it pretty often.

I'd recommend (like others have in this thread) getting a 22" magnaflow resonator. It's more expensive, but it'll last forever.

I'm doin that next time, I did NOT have the patience to order one and drive my car around a minute more with the rasp as annoying and loud as it was. This way next time I'll have time to buy one..

Also above^ i'd get a 22" res as stated

I've got v2OBX with the MR resonated test pipe. But I have a Cattman B-pipe & muffler.

Purple hornies sound even better and last longer. I had a pair on my '74 Z/28 when I bought it (dumps at the axle), had a real mean sound but just too loud for every day use. Plus, like you pointed out, the glass eventually does burn out.

I don't know what resonator the muffler shop used on my old Accord, but between that and the Vortec turbo muffler, even with a header my cold air intake made more noise than the exhaust.

The main problem we have is that V6 cars don't sound all that great when loud. Oddly enough, I think the intake roar has a more pleasing tone than a loud exhaust.

I think they sound pretty nice when loud with an equal length Y. Otherwise you get that "pontiac" sound that I couldn't care less for. It's definitely a preference thing. Those who only like and only want the sound of a V8 have no place buying a V6 and having all the wrong expectations, though.

Oh no, I have. I was expecting rasp, but you never know what it sounds like till you are actually running it with straight pipes and fire it up for the first time It's all good.

Pontiac... heh heh. Good one.

There are those of us stuck between both worlds, Sparks. Jonesing for a G37, but week in the knees for the rumble of a Mustang GT. With Ford reviving the 5.0 liter V8 next year... well, there's another test drive in my future.

Such conflict.

No doubt, I'd vote for the lt1 v8 roar or the v8 gt roar over our cars anyday. I just simply find it the best sound, period.

Some of their cars may be shi$. But there's just something about the rumble or a v8.

*speaking strictly sound, not performance*

I don't think anyone here has any expectations that our cars will sound like a V8. Just hard to find an exhaust that sounds really good with a V6 although G35s and 350/370Z's definitely are better than most V6 cars.

The Viper guys have it the worst, V10s have a UPS truck sound and it there isn't much they can do about it...

Doubt they care much when they blow pretty much every other car on the road.
