My bumper came with a painted grill...what?

Hey guys, I got the bumper in today. But here's the problem. It came with a grill, and it's painted. I feel like it'll be tacky and the color will just overwhelm it because I liked that bit of black. Is there any way around this? Anything to put on it, how to paint it, etc. without having to shave it off? I don't have the money to get more work done on it.

Other than that problem, the paint seems to match up well. Will need to look at it in the sun tomorrow morning.

The grill can be removed and you can repaint to your liking, is your after the chrome look in the middle tape the two straight edges you want and spray the chrome area first be sure to give it a good amount of time to dry properly. Once it has dried and cured for a day you can remove the taped edges and now place some new fresh tape over the chrome area's and then you can spray all the fin area's back to black should that be the color you after, let dry and cure if you have used gloss spray paint I would still apply a coating of clear coat to give a bit more strength to the newly paint surfaces and then reinstall the grill, shouldn't cost you more than 30.00 for the three different cans of paint. Just take your time and it should come out quit nice.

I was under the impression that the grill on the 00/01 bumper cover was molded in, and the 02/03 had a removeable grill.

^^^ you may be correct I don't own an early 5th gen, however the aftermarket folks sure make a lot of different grill inserts for something that you have suggested is molded in.

Well, you made me feel so much better. All makes sense, (and I'll definitely tape up the whole stinking bumper so it doesn't get misted.) Also, are we just talking about generic spray paints you can get at autozone? Or are there certain types of paint they sell for this?

I believe you're right, because the one on now moves with the bumper. Which I noticed and now makes more sense, I just wanted to figure out the best way to paint it.

Did you need two threads.

Ghost you can't remove the grille its attached to the bumper.

Get some painters tape and tape it off on the bumper, go to the auto parts store, get some primer, black paint and clear. Paint it yourself...

I did mine on the car, newspaper is your friend...if you get slight over spray, clay bar cleans it up

Scuff it with a Scotchbrite pad and clean it real good with alcohol wipes. The spraypaint it gunmetal and clear coat.

Yeah, no, just slightly impatient and thought people wouldn't respond to the other one .

So I just spray right across and it looks like new? Sounds easy enough.

Thanks DrunkieTheBear, on clearly up the grill removal, as I said I don't own the particular gen so forgive my error on the removal part. However the repainting of the grill can still be done simple means your going to have to tape and mask off a much larger area to avoid over spray on that nice new finished bumper.

JonMcJunkin yes you can by the spray paint at your local autozone parts store, and as mentioned you should scuff up the surfaces that you wish to repaint to allow the paint a better surface to adhere to.

So basically...

01) Scruff up the grill with Scotchrite pads.
02) Clean well with alcohol wipes.
03) Tape up bumper with the exception of the grill.
04) Cover with a primer. Let dry.
05) Spray the outside rim with chrome. Let dry.
06) Paint the grill. Let dry.
07) Clear coat it. Let dry.
08) INSTALL BUMPER!

Your not painting the bumper so there is no need to scuff up the bumper, you want to scuff up only the grill that is being painted

D&H Autoparts. The prices are cheap, so it's a good substitute.

Don't make fun of eBay. I bought two headlights and a side marker light on eBay.

got no problems with ebay, just the bumpers. g/l with your project. my is on just masking the bumper and painting the grill. a nice gloss black would look good IMO. and seal it with some sort of clear coat, cuz IT WILL chip. i paint my perimeter ring, and its chipping now.

Thanks. I thought about cutting out the grill, but I rather have a little fun and paint it! Also, Sunlit Sand Maximas FTW!
After seeing your Max I've decided I want to AE my headlights, just not yet.
And what's an ss?

Thanks for the good luck wish anomaly! I'm just gonna paint it as you've suggested. One day maybe I'll retrofit an 03 grill on my 00. Who knows.

'ss' is the Street Scene grill (in my sig and in anomaly117's sig). You could either cut out the stock grill (I did) and install the ss, or place the ss over the stock grill. Took about 50mins, only b/c of the cutting and ziptie placement.

lol Gold Club fo eva eva

Awesome! I really like the look of that, but I'm afraid if I AE'd my lights, installed fogs, that grill, and a ground kit (All which I plan to do, hopefully by the end of summer) I'd be your twin. Maybe you're just such a great influence?

Oh, and not to mention, I out ghetto'd you on your zipties. Duct tape FTW!

I've purchased a bumper for my '00 from D&H as well. Bumper and grille came painted as well, but with a darker color car, grille looks better painted to match, IMO. Hardest part was finding a dang emblem!

That is the correct method for painting a plastic trim piece.

It's not the correct method for painting wheels. They're metal, not plastic, and they're powdercoated with a clearcoat.

So how do I do the wheels?

This was my plan:

1. Clean.
2. Wipe with alcohol.
3. Tape up.
4. Spray them directly with the store bought Dupli-Color Wheel GUN METAL paint.
5. Let dry.
6. Spray 2nd coat.
7. Dry.
8. Spray with Dupli-Color clear coat.
9. Dry.
10. remove tape and re-mount.

Will this work?

PS: I am just painting my stock 5-spoke 16's. No biggie on the finish. It looks junk right now, years of abuse from the previous owner.

use the link I just posted to that honda site. That's pretty much the tutorial I used last year when I painted my 5th gen wheels, and they've held up very well.

It's important to remove all the old paint and clearcoat from them so that there's a very clean and even surface for the paint to adhere too. Otherwise the surface will be rough and bumpy and the paint won't really stick well.

End of threadjack.

I was planning on just figuring out a way to pull the old emblem out and attaching it to the new bumper somehow. I hope the D&H products work well, the color matches very well, and with the inexpensive prices, I can eventually get my rear bumper and fender fixed as well, then my car will be in pristine condition!

I agree with a sterling mist, super black, navy, etc. the painted grill would look good, but I'm afraid the light sunlit sand (which actually has a silver tint to it) would be overkill. Eventually I want to AE my headlights and get clear sidemarkers, and the tan grill would ruin that look I think, IMHO.

The bumper is good, and you're paint should match well. The quality work was top grade given the price you pay. Supposedly here in Virginia we're supposed to get over 20 inches of snow this weekend, so if we get "snowed in" it'll be a good little project. Paint in the garage, warm it up to dry, etc.

I feel that the bumper could be done within 24 hours if I work around the clock, which I will. I have no problem being up until 3am for Max

Don't worry about threadjacking, that's still some helpful insight should I ever want to paint my wheels.

ALSO. The GXE's come pre-wired for fogs, correct? So I just need to order the fogs and housing, and wire them to turn on with my headlights and I should be good to go, correct?

Anyone know the answer to my foglights question?

Also, is the emblem on the front end stuck on there with adhesive or bolts, etc?

I think you'd find nice subtle differences to set yourself apart from mine and other Gold Club types lol. You've already got the rims it seems.

Perhaps you could lip that bumper up before putting it on the ride?

haha, yeah. I like the rims, but my mom bought them when it was her car. I wish they were at least 17's, so once I get the money I'm going to put a lip on her, but I'm gonna go ahead and install the bumper today, but I'll also get larger wheels. They have ones that look like the G37 coupes

I havent' revised the bumper yet though, so the grill is gonna be tan. I'm gonna ride it out for a week and see how I feel about it.
