Considering that number has called you many times, and the dealer calling you later to confirm the order... It's likely the first woman you talked to doesn't even work at that dealership. She is probably a dedicated sales person who makes those calls then lets the appropriate dealer know you want an appointment, so the dealer calls you to confirm.
Like others have said, it's just aggressive sales. Go have fun with them, but I wouldn't commit to anything. And for your sake, don't let them see how excited you are about it...

The sticker on the windshield of that car makes me want to kick puppies...
I got a similar call from the dealer. I went in and humored them...had a little fun. Amazing how they wanted to give me above KBB on the phone, but my car was only worth $2500 to them when I walked through the door.

well i went.. I learned one thing,.. i will never buy a car from that dealer.
wasnt so much a basic sales tactic..the sales lady was basically acting as a middle man.. basically they had a customer looking for a 6spd 5.5 gen , and prob laid out what they were willing to spend... and well you get it..
not only was she dumb, i didnt even want to test drive anyhting cause i wouldnt get into a car with her... one of her questions.. "do you have the 2 door maxima or the 4 door" ,... i took a long pause while staring at her blankly.. and said.. . . . . . . 4 .
i didnt drive my max there because i knew they were going to want to take it and look at it(obvious) but,.. i told them everything they need to know.. miles.. condition.. maintence.. ect,.. and she told me shes going to have to talk to her manager who was in a "meeting" .. (sureee he was).....and she will call me with in 3 hours with an exact quote range,.. she said she would guess that they will offer 8-12grand,.. which would be a wire transfer and i wouldnt have to buy anything..
lol.. what a joke of a sales buisness

I would've walked out as soon as I heard "2 or 4-door."
Anyone who's working at a car dealer that doesn't know anything about the cars they sell, especially at a new-car dealer, isn't worth my time.
If I were you, I would've driven the Max, and when they asked to take a look, told them that when I can see the money, they can see the car. Tease them a bit.

I think Nissan dealers everywhere were brought down a notch after that.
(except for DaveB's stomping ground of course )

Typical. When the Accords first came out with a V6 in 1998 (yes, I know the 5th gens also got them but they were 2.7 and not 3.0 liter engines), I thought about selling my 1990 Accord and getting a new one. Dealer offered me $1500 in trade. Got $1500 cash for it 6 years and 130,000 miles later! Even funnier, I told the guy I was looking for a silver on black car, no tint (the shop I've used in the past does superb work and no dealer mark-up) and no spoiler. First one he shows me, you guessed it, tint and a spoiler. Then I noticed he was looking at the window stickers and I asked why. He said that's how he'd know the car had a V6. I kind of rolled my eyes and told him the V6 cars have dual exhaust and 5 lug wheels and 4 cylinder cars had single exhaust and 4 lug wheels. Pretty sad I knew more about the cars than he did.

The old scare-you-into-thinking-your-car-is-going-to-blow-up tactic. So that they can knock money off for having to shell out their money for "repairs." And kindly sell you into a new car that won't have any issues...or isn't supposed to.
The kicker to the story is them mentioning at one point that I needed knew struts and strut mounts. I asked them how they knew that without even test driving the car or putting it on a lift.
Threw the salesman for a loop.

UPDATE:::
The manager guy that i was expecting to talk to called me back.. was like how come you didnt bring the car? to which i said, "she never said it was an appraisal",..to which he then asked me to bring it down to be appraised, to which i said im not interested, and he said why --and i said "i was turned off by your sales lady who asked if it was a 2 door maxima",.. this whent back and forth untill he begged me to come down sat because the buyer would be there who wants to look at the car,.. i then demanded him to give me a price range and he said 7-12 guarenteed...
I had a blah attitude said i would think about it and call back if i was interested,..
They obviously want to pick out every and any defect and there is no chance in hell they would offer 12,.. unless they have some fool who is willing to spend 15 ,.. not to mention my aftermarket suspension prob brings down the value ,.. and all my other mods,.. so bottom line,.. im not bringing it down there to be picked away untill they offer 8 grand,..I can only imagine the haunting phone calls im going to get for the next week..

You can always make it easy for them to purchase your car, by standing there and remaining firm on its your for 12K ... look straight at him give it a second or two to sink into his head and then turn and slowly make your way to the door ... and should he ask where your going, simply pause glance back and reply "You took to long to answer" and enjoy the moment of pleasure as you walk out the door.

Lol, this exact same thing happened to me. Of course it was partly my fault as I opened my big mouth talking to the service writer (car was in for broken power window motor..my only repair in over 3 years!) about how rare the 6 speed was in the Max's. Not even 2 weeks later I get the same type of call from the dealership saying how my car was in high demand bla bla bla. At first I felt all special then I remembered the conversation I had with the service writer.
There is some truth to this tactic and that's why it works so well. They are playing to our egos. They know that there are certain people who take very good care of their cars, have lower than normal miles, excellent interior/exteriors, etc. It's really easy to work this tactic if the owner himself came into the dealership saying how rare the car is. I'd bet money if I took my car in there for another service trip, I'd be getting another "Hey! You're car is the awesomeost and we have to have it!" type of call.
Imo though this is a great way for the dealer to sell some new cars, and I don't blame them a bit for fishing this way. I wouldn't call this a scam, just a great sales tactic. The only way I can see this backfiring on them is if the owner becomes convinced the car really is rare and in demand. He could tell the dealer he wants an exorbitant amount of money for the car thereby wasting both parties time. In a way, the dealer is giving the customer an out there.

" We'll take your car and how about you get one of these newer body maximas for only XXX A month? It'd only be XXX more than you're paying now. Just test drive it"....That's what it's gonna be like..

Let's be honest here... There's no buyer wanting the car. The only "interested buyer" that might show up would be another salesman posing as an independent buyer. They think you're a sucker (and evidently it's working after reading your posts). They're looking to scam you on a lowball trade-in offer after they "appraise" your car and show you a laundry list of things that are wrong with it. Frankly what they're doing at that point is borderline illegal. But it's just close enough to the white side of the gray that they get away with it.
Their goal is to sell you a newer car that you'll have to finance. The stealership isn't looking to buy an 8 year old Maxima for a trade in, especially at that price. Your car will sit on the lot for a couple weeks, then it's off to auction.
Dealerships trade in and clean up cars less than 5 years old. anything older than that usually gets detailed and sent to auction. There's not enough profit for a delaership to put more than an hour or two of cleanup into a car that old.
even if they offered $12k for it now, you'll only get about 5-6k out of it by the time they get done chewing on you and knocking off for anything and everything they can.
If they offer you more than that on the trade, then they're simply marking the purchase price of the next car and washing the paperwork so you think you bought more car.
If you let them buy it outright, you won't leave there with more than $5000 in your pocket.
stop wasting your time or trying to scam them or entertain yourself. You're a guppy in a shark tank, whether you think you are or not. These guys do this 10 times a day, to people MUCH more savvy on the deal than you. You didn't even think it was a scam when you first got the call- how do you think you're going to hold up when you get cornered in a high pressure sales manager's office and they have your keys?

and.. can you elaborate on what is technically illegal persay

I'd gladly take the cash and tell them I wouldn't be buying anything from them, but would be more than happy to capitalize on that price they're paying.
I dunno I'd probably play it... If they actually told me they were gonna get me that much $, I'd ask "where do we begin?"
