I had to wrap the hook with electric tape (to give it more girth so it wouldn't bounce around when connected to the hood latch)

Everytime I hit a bump I noticed the hood would jump. The hook ring (that connects to the hood latch) was rusty and withered. The electric tape gave it cushion and stability

....no more anti-gravity hood

Do a search for DaveB. He works in parts for South Point Nissan and can get you OEM parts for reasonable prices. Let him know you are a member of Max.org. Number I have for him is (888) 254-6060. Last name is Burnette.

I put some rubber sheets with adhesive on the back of them right on top of the rubber stoppers, also did the electrical tape around my latch.
Shes on sturdy now.

Anyone ever tried mounting adjustable stoppers on the hood?
Lots of cars come with them for the trunks, etc.

My hood moves a little too at the latch. I'm gonna tackle this fix this weekend too.

Search terms : hood vibrate fix

Result: http://forums.maxima.org/5th-generat...on-rattle.html

I asked about the vibrating hood and got tons of answers. There is a service bulletin for it as well.

there are special strips you can buy to glue to your headlight to eliminate the gap at the hood, also there is a TSB which recommends removing the inside cover from the hood and basically you use a small scraper and check that all the ribs are welded to the hood. Sometimes the tacks break loose, so they recommend using an rtv sealant to glue the ribs where the tacks are broken.

It you have an '01 like I do there is a tsb for hood vibration at highway speeds. If that's your issue you need to get the foam strips that go on the top of the headlights to prevent air from getting in under the hood. For some reason Nissan didn't put them on the '01 but did on the other model years for our body style. Dave B can help you as has been suggested.

hood vibration

My 02 has had vibration at highway speeds since new, took it to the dealer with under 10K on it way back in 02 and they said there was nothing they could do, the hood was properly adjusted, I just lived with it thinking it was a bad design.

there are adjustable rubber stoppers on the top radiator support, try adjusting them, also, sometimes you might need to adjust the hood latch itself for proper alignment.

You can also get a pair in good condition at any junkyard. I think the screw-in part of the rubber stopper is standarized, so any stopper from any car should fit (I got a pair from a Toyota 4 Runner for my car). Just screw-in as much as needed to stop the vibration. The edge along the sides of your hood should be flush with those of the fenders (mine was sitting below them).

I will assume that most of the owners in this thread will find out that replacing, raising, modifying the rubber bumpers and/or the latch will not fix the issue. Nor will putting adhesive padding on top of the headlights. I went as far as putting insulation across the entire front of the hood to completely block all air from entering the front area. I have even adjusted the locking mechanism multiple times and still no fix.

This is a known issue with the Maxima's. As for the TSB, I read on that about 2 years ago, but never attempted to secure the support beams back to the hood with a sealant. Might attempt this spring.

I've just learned to deal with it.

Ok guys since no one really has good solution, I'll show yall what I've done to eliminate that flopping/jumping hood!!!! It worked on my nerves as well and the OEM bumpstops are a F*&^ing joke, plus they dry rot, tear all that good crap... The modification might cost about $5....I've done this on the 2003 and 1990 Max:
1. 2 (ea) carriage bolts 3/8"x 1.5" long
2. 2 or 4(ea) 3/8" nuts (I use 4 to act as jamnuts under the radiator support core/brace
3. 2(ea) 3/8" lockwashers
4. 2(ea) 3/8" large area washer(fender washers)
5. 2(ea) 1/2" rubber or vinyl tips ( cut to fit)

Check it out....pure ingenuity and simplicity providing awesome functionality!!!! Dam that flows good...LOL...try it guys it solves the problem for real!

FWIW, I've had my 'tape mod' on for a little over a year (w/o consequence).

The above method I would presume is much sturdier w/ a longer lasting effect.
